S.N.A.F.U.

In the movie , ' Saving Private Ryan ' , the G.I. s tell a newly recruited translator that SNAFU is French. Of course , the SNAFU meaning is universal , Situation Normal All F***** Up.

Well, the fireplace story. Call the service guy he comes last week.
Pulls apart the guts and takes away the gas distribution assembly.
The part is not available and is ordered for Mon.
I go up and wait. The call comes at 3 PM , part never arrived.
No problem. The service guy is going to Australia on Fri. We are away Tues - Thurs. Great.
Hopefully the neighbours can let the service guy in.
Want to bet how this part of the story works out.

You know you want to think that everyone is doing their best .... got to wonder , hunh.

The Syria dilemma. On ' Cross Country Check up ' , a CBC radio show they polled the public and had experts from different think groups and universities weighing in. OMG , clear as mud , now.

One representative of a government watch dog claimed that Hillary Clinton and John Kerry lauded Assad as a reformer and the best hope for Syria. Where does Assad get his hutzpah from , the U.S.
Sort of ' you made him , you deal with him '
Hey , heard this story before - I have

Weather is summer-ish. Rain threatens

Finally

I was despairing of never being able to produce , by the numbers , that was good news .
Well , the CAA motoring magazine came through.
Our Thanksgiving Day is coming up in Oct.

Turkey ( food not country ) facts

3 100 000          turkeys purchased
0                       escapes
15 191               acres , producing cranberries
7                        hrs cooking the turkey
16                      min eating the turkey
3                        hrs . time spent arguing about or with family

Also , the mag listed upcoming world events that you could attend
I'm OK w/ Oktobefest but ' Day of the Dead ' in Oaxaca , Mex. Nope. Its supposed to be a celebration  ...... but come on.  " Where is your trip this year " Oh , we're off to Celebrate the Dead

weather : rain came and went. Blue , cool and windy .  Neat

TV , last night ,had re-runs of 2001 , 9 / 11 events
They focussed on the efforts and heroism of the day ( s ). Cerebrally , that day changed a lot for me. No, no one close was involved.
In my mind's eye , when they show that footage of the events of 9 / 11 , automatically I can see those clips of the people in some eastern cities , cheering and dancing when the saw the towers go down.

Prior to those pictures , I was pretty much , leave the Middle East alone , they are people too.
Post - 9 /11 , well , its them or us , Baby.
If I hear once more about the ' peace loving ' people of _________ ( fill in the blank ) , I'll carpet bomb the place myself.
Oops , starting to rant here , apologies.

Had tickets for last nights lotto draw. If the next blog is from Oaxaca
you can guess who won.

Have a good one!

Are You Sure

In the Loop news , the headline was ' Canada Unprepared for Dementia Epidemic ' .
OK , but based on this house , I figured that the epidemic was here already. Wow , the number of times that I end in a room , going ' duh ' what are you here for ?

Weather , rain and cool. 62 F out there. TG , I was guessing that the lawn needed watering , saved.
I took drugs last night. The GP said that I could take Gravol as a sleep aid when necessary. I was really tired and thought maybe an uninterrupted night's sleep would help.
Slept right through except for a washroom break.
I'll do it to-night again.
Computers. This morning, the e-machine was slow. I checked the ' defragmentation ' on the main drive. It analyzed out at 1 %. However , experience has proved that ' defragging ' changes , something.Took about ten minutes.
The result - amazing speed up in cycling time. Windows are loading in seconds.

On the Radio

at night. Plugged in the ear buds about 4 this AM.
Rwanda has 400 000 coffee farms and 11 million people. The focus was a coffee shop that has recently opened  It is one of the few , in a tea drinking country.
Want to famous for something ? Don't go Rwanda's way. In 1994 , in 100 days , Hu-tu s ( sp ? ) killed 1 million rival clan Tutsi s.
Drink your coffee , praise the Lord , Pass the powder.

As well , as relief efforts for displaced Syrians gets going the UN humanitarian fund is calling for 23 billion dollars. I must have been really dozey , I'm going to check that one. They must have meant ......dunno b/c Canada has pledged 45 million.

Keeping up w/ the GWN , for the southerners. House sales in Canada rose year over year for Aug , 21 % in T.O. , 50 % in Vancouver and 30 % in Calgary.

Toronto is in a ' TIFF ' or the Toronto International Film Festival. One of the biggest in the world. We're not going. Big name stars appeared - I forget their names

Weather , temperatures hit 50 F , overnight. Bright and sunny.

Bombing Syria

I guess that I'm sort of OK , on that. However , there are cities there that are reknowned in history. Damascus etc. In ' Lawrence of Arabia ' Prince Faisal talks about hanging gardens and street lamps in the 4 th century.
And according to the News of the World , you've got 85 countiries that could be in the same boat as Syria , more or less. Oops.
Yeah , where do you stop.
You know , not such a good idea after all.

" For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard
All valiant dust that builds on dust
And guarding calls not Thee to guard
For frantic boast and foolish word
Thy Mercy on Thine people Lord "

Rudyard Kipling , from the ' Recessional ' , approx 1880

As well, the Syrian army has moved missiles into the city in residential areas. The troops are deployed throughout the city and away from barracks.

Weather is fall-like. Cool and sunny.

Booked a yearly physical. The last one was Jul 2010. Oops. Let that one slide , hunh.

Listened to the ' 12 French horns ', this morning making muffins. Aha , slid that gem in , right. Muffin day , is fragrant and rewarding.

Computers. I tried to back up my files and programs. I put in a 8 Gb flash drive. The 'puter hemmed and hawed and then got started. Part way through , a window pops up , ' tape is full , insert new media.
When  I checked , the display for the flash drive said ' 4.1 Gb ' , in other words its 1/2 full. Maybe ,8 Gb doesn't mean what I think.

She said it

Credit where , credit is due. The weather girl on CBC , from the London , On. edition  " Its like somebody threw a switch " She was referencing the sudden temperature change. Bingo , bango  fall arrived.
Fishing was credible Tues. 5 hrs - 6 bass and a keeper perch.
Wind was pretty much unforgiving but all in all , very fishable

At QMH , the fireplace quit last May. Genius , here , figured to get going on it , last week of August. Well , the temperature goes down to 40 F to-night. So , in essence , I'm only a week too slow. The gas fireplace is 13 yrs old , thus , some repair work seems logical. Yeah , most likely $ 150 worth.

Tried out the sunglasses w/ video camera - we will look at the footage ( actually , the sequences are so brief , it's really ' inch-age '.

We looked.
Problem : the glasses have the camera mounted above the bridge of the nose , at forehead level. The fish need to be held above eye level or only their backs show. Steven Spielberg is safe. And noisy , any movement of clothes , equipment etc is very loud and echoes.
Video is clear and sharp

Weather , cooler , wind swung SW - W - NW , NE is the prevailing wind.

From merry ol' London ( the England one ,  this time ) , a new telecom building , called the ' Walky'Talky ' is being built to reflect sunlight. How good could the reflection be ?  The heat melted a car three blocks away. . Oops or is this past oops . The engineers and architect are trying to resolve the problem.

On triple D , the food show where Guy Fieri visits different Mom and Pop restaurants , he ate the Home Wrecker. Ready.
A 1 lb hot dog , 15 inches long , onions  , 2 sauces and toppings. On TV , it looked like three pieces of pizza rolled to-gether. Crikey , that was a dog.
In Vegas , I talked a friend into eating a 1 foot hot dog ( and beer , cost $ 1.50 ). This hot dog had no relation to meat , whatsoever. I'm not sure how much cereal was in the weiner , either. What was it ? Dunno. The beer was related to rhino piss or something close. Sorry for the offensive language but I didn't want to demean any other liquid.
The Heineken and dog for $ 3 was much better. Yeah , we ate bargain everywhere that trip. At 12 midnight , Bourbon St Grill offered bacon and eggs for $ 3. Coffee was free the milk , 2.45.
Oops, careful what you drink

Recommending

Going out on a limb here

Fiddling w/ YouTube , listening to Billy Vaughn , why ? Dunno. Used to love Billy Vaughn ( orchestra kind of thing )

Found a ' solo ' performance on the French horn. This guy plays 12 French Horn parts in a tribute to John Williams. Its not hard to take b/c its ' StarWars , Raiders of the Lost Ark etc '. He plays all 12 parts and wrote the arrangements himself.
On YouTube , type in  " 12 French Horns "
As well , in the sidebar , there was the ' Vienna Horns ' and the ' London Horn Sound ' , both were excellent.
I played French horn in school. My greatest triumph , was playing ' Wonderland by Night ' w/ no valves on the French horn.
Unfortunately , that was about all that I could play.

Sunday , was slow ... is slow. Firstly , sportswise , Alabama thumped Va Tech w/ no offense. Typical Bama job , too many moving parts for most teams. Offense goes slow , special teams add 14 points and the defence scores 7.

In soccer , Arsenal beat Tottenham. So , my Red teams are good to go this week end.

I've been cheering for Bama since 1962 , Bear Bryant etc. Didn't know anything about Alabama ,but there was a panache about a ' Crimson Tide '.
Arsenal , well , probably , 1970. To be fair , at this time the Gunners were winning frequently. But the " Gunners " of Highbury.
What an image.
I was / am in an English fog.
I used to cook English recipes when I was 16. I loved ' Toad in the Hole ' , neat names . My education was an Imperial education. Our textbooks reflected a strong English bias. History , literature and language. I guess that I soaked it all up.
Now , with M's family located throughout England , its reinforced.

For a slow Sunday , what else could I do but make another clafoutis.
Used blueberries. Made a slight ' oops ' but it worked out. Tastes great.
The description of the clafoutis calls it , an treat for lazy summer days and a brunch. Or dessert. Perfecto , for to-day.
