The name is the dollar store or Dollarama. not so, my friend. To wit, I took the plunge and replaced the Garmin GPS. I'm pretty sure that it dates back to 1999. BUT promised life time map updates. And that happened.
Ah. There is no backup storage and the download take an hour. The 12 V charging cable frayed and was close to useless. I purchased a ' Garmin ' like power cord. Did the job.
This year, I tried to turn on ' traffic assist '. Oh, I discovered the FM antenna was the Garmin power cable. Uh oh !
And w / age for my eyes, the screen was much too small. I suppose there might be enlarge functions on the Garmin. Time to change.

The knock off Yi brand, was 1 / 2 the price. The big change and I mean bi,  was a 9 inch screen. And it suits nicely.
The mounting instructions incl. ' choose a place on the windshield not blocking your view '
Excuse me - at 9 inches the GPS is the view if placed under the mirror.

Dollarama. In electronics, I found a non slip [ low slip ] pad for an I phone. There is a notch on either side to accept the edge of a cellphone. Well, guess what, it also takes the bottom edge of the GPS. I still use the windshield mounting bracket and suction cup but as a balance behind the GPS.
The YGPS sits on the dash, not sliding and seems stable. A tad higher than the Garmin b / c you see the Garmin was on a bean bag support base. Maybe an inch difference

Observations. The screen is beuti ! The woman s voice not so. I can see the streets clearly.

Not fine,  The YGPS sends you where it wants. To get to Port Union and # 401, taking the # 401 makes sense. The Yi - GPS, wanted me to drive thru the city. Nope. Now, it did ' re - calculate ' and I got there. But you need to check your route. 
To be fair, I haven't read all the instructions for ' customization ' 
So ......

Turn down the voice [  a lot ]. Read the broken English blurp.

OK. As well, the Dollarama had a ' mouse pad w / wrist bump '. There was a groove between the pad and wrist bump, aha ! ' would it fit the bottom edge of the YGPS. Obviously,  a non starter b /c I got the cellphone pad to work. However, I'm trying the mouse pad and the worst bump does work. There is a sharpness to the desk edge and the ' bump ' covers that edge, thank you.
Oh, both items were $ 1.75.

' boro is dreary. still. cool ish to cold ???? So it's a bonus day the landscaping company dropped by and they blew out my gutters which is hard for me to do by myself. They also deleefed the whole front and back and like like for me it'd be like 4 hours 4 and 1/2 hours work. But for them you know they are here 45 minutes. Yeah give or take but there's three of them with really good leaf blowers. So I mean that's you know that's a bonus for us. Anyways, I wanted to talk about the thought that I think the old philosophical idea was a life unexamined isn't worth living and today I had an interesting morning. I went on the computer and I went to YouTube and the one channel that I saw was on how the Japanese live life simply and better and it was very interesting because they said eating rice is much easier on your digestive system and it helps you relax or it helps your whole body. You know a tune itself. I thought that was very interesting also, and I've heard this before eating pickled items can aid your digestion because the pickling process releases vitamins that you wouldn't normally get rather interesting, huh?

my Pixel w / new battery is behaving solidly, no glitches

ran some chores - donation to the local Salvation Army. And the phone [ works fine so far ] and we wanted to test a pub for food [ size and quality ] perhaps for an upcoming entertainment evening

a quiet day. stayed in and recuperated from the adventure out. However, banking got looked at. Did some wash.
Plus, I have decorative lighting that trims the sidelight windows at the front doorway. Its been six or seven years, that I've tried for accents at the entranceway. For approx, three to four months the LED tube lites have been dim. [ right side only ]
So, fiddling seems to indicate the straightening the feed wires that are coming out of the light tubing can make the tube lites re - power up.
Aha. over time a kink has developed that impedes conductance. Yesterday was the day. I fiddled w / the wire. Nope.
Thus, testing was required. I took down the tube lites from the sidelight window [ right side only ]. After some trial and error. Yepper. I had tube lites as bright as the left side. I figured that if I re - positioned the tube and wire at the junction point as I replaced the tube lites, maybe the realignment would stay as needed.

It worked. Success. Jerry - rigging for sure, but success.

Today, the ninth, we will get snow flurries / rain / sleet - basically, precipitation thru the day, varying types w / temperatures. Hello - winter

And the snow is sticking to the road. started accumulating after noon

however, changeable weather meant rain on one day while in PEC
then driving home. drizzle followed by a down pour as we neared home
dribbles as we got to within a mile

lessons learned. M .. needs a booster step for some beds. will work on that
actually, likely would help here as well

Returning to the Road

 we were unsure of what to pack

Worries galore. Only one came true. Of course.

I can see the wind whipping up leaves and debris

follow up. approx. three years ago. I began a re - model of the ' computer room '. I re - tell this attempt for background. The room is south facing and views the street. not a great angle, but the angle shows the southern arm of our street [ a crescent ].
I see cars moving to and from onto the street. plus, the ' autumn Blaze ' maple is left centre in the frame
At the time, the computer set up was a small laptop and monitor. AND a desk approx 4 ft by 2 1 / 2 ft. plus a slightly smaller computer type desk There is a pull out couch, which converted filled the room width and blocked passage

I began to minimize the ' desk ' [ particle board mostly ] using saw and determination w / some small success. I removed one desk [ smaller ] and made that desk into a shelf.
the whole affair was haphazard and rather disappointing.
THEN. across the street, on the curb was a pile of metal tube and such - a corner desk ! I hauled the sucker home. The ' desk ' is  three by two or so. The frame stands 4 feet tall and has  3 levels. The top two shelves are recessed by a foot and a bit. I added a top shelf by taking the foot rest level and mounting it as a shelf

Convenient, w/ a great view. And yes the couch pull out can be used as intended. not a optimal layout but serviceable. 

the morning routine, includes a session at the Chromebook, watching a TV screen w / the mirrored screen. the street moves and I watch the weather and the day arrive

 🏩 the sun is beaming in the ' boro. overcast sporadically. however, this seems dry compared to the last three days. A good day for anything. We were indoors.
We did monthly finance checks. Vetted the Visa bill. Internet transfer of the monthly mortgage cheque.
Further. we made reservations for a 3 day side trip to PEC. And , potentially, our favourite INN. 

potentially ? well. We tried the same dates and others before by phone. And were told ' NO '

This time on line, they took our money and sent confirmation. ??????

Quite the day and never left our chairs [ well ,house ]

Oh ! and sprinkle w / moth balls as an anti - destructive animal measure

Going back. Saturday, I was in doubt about how much could be done re : getting boat to dry land. However, Saturday was definitely and day of great accomplishment [ oh ! not me but them ]

Sunday, turned out mostly me working, slowly. I managed to change the Lower Gear Case oil.
Next, I cleared the remaining bins and took them up to fishing room storage.
Lastly, I loosely tarped the boat. The marine deck carpet was still soaked from the Friday ' Saturday morning rains. Trick was to cover the bassboat to prevent accumulation of more wet. And yet allow air to circulate to further dry the interior if possible 
Oh. honourable mentio to J & W for shopping in town [ oil and mothball, thank you ]

I managed quite well.

Now. Despite the emotional relief, I found it hard to relax and slept 6 - 7 hrs w/ some bouts of restlessness. I don't think that you can turn off worry instantly

Took 5 minutes to pump out boat hold.

The guys brought out the spare winch.

The existing outside trolley got modified two times. They were Trojans at work

Twice w / loaded the boat but the second go, we fogged the ETec for winter 

Batteries are in house and charging.

Bass boat needs equipment brought up and somehow tarped for winter ❄️ 

BUT I am 80  % at ease, knowing the final

Work is doable and maybe even by me

Success!

 🥜🥜 tired and disheartened, told M .. I was feeling inadequate. Likely, I am wrung out from a full day of fishing and worrying
the worrying, is the worst part, of course 

on the upside. this weekend there will be help up at the Q '.

accomplished one job. had the battery in my Pixel 6 a cellphone replaced. this is in accord w /  Pixel battery replacement program. for over a year, Pixel 6 a [ and others ] started to overheat and lose battery capacity. Oftentimes, dismal performance. 
I thought that my phone had escaped but warnings started to appear relating to battery mal - performance 

So, on an off day, at least something got done

the launching. the trolley jammed on the way down to the water. We pushed the boat off.
E Tec, bless her heart, started w / a hiccup but fired right up

Fishing was slow and some areas had active fish, small but interested

returning to the railway. OK. let s fixer ' up. Did our best but there was a system failure. The trolley kept slipping off the rail.

in retrospect, the metal is fatigued and the rails have spread, enough for the wheels to ' drop ' or miss the edge 

we left the boat out on the dock, locked and bumper protected

desultory ending. the rails are likely circa 1990 or earlier.

our day was mostly errands w / a Dr visit [ hopefully the last of the year reviews from M ...s hospitalization last year ]

thus. 30 minutes became 2 h. we hashed and re - hashed the history , solved and re -solved the overall trolley / railway and winch set up at the Q ' boathouse .

In the end. the focus became research a new winch, railway and trolley. TBD

then. a proof of concept idea. make a running pulley that sits on the ground. As at now, the winch line starts at slightly below hip height runs along the apron of the ground and bends down to attach to the trolley.
the pulley will change the angle of the winch s pull and stop the drag and hence poor angle of the winch line

I found an example at Princess Auto. A $ 16 item. Then affix the pulley somehow to a board or boards and give it a go

I found a quilter lady. Quite close to home and very accomplished 

Today, I picked up the fabric piece of Oriental design. Aunt Barbara of England and not our Aunt but a cousin s aunt kindly recalled our preference in design. Aunty B gave the fabric to cousin and relayed on to us this past May

 6:30 PM the railroad trolley got jammed, mega. One hr and something to figure out the solution

our morning start : the E Tec didn't want to start. Finally, yes, but after half a day

however, I set the hook on an acrobatic 2 # small mouth. only four fish for the day
my fish was the biggest and best. Using a Child rig, I aimed for a log approx 6 in in diameter that was poking out of the water, 20 ft from shore.
Good shooting, my friends. B /c Child rig hit the water and BOOM ! "Fish On ! "

Two notes. One the Child rig drops quickly and does not drift in the wind much, gotta find the spot

first go was afternoon at a Scarborugh pub. attendance was encouraging and enthusiastic. 
Well, FB Leacock Collegiate page, I chose Sept 17 at a food court. Reaction was excellent and comments few. Last night as I sat in the food court, the thought was ' if one person shows, that's good '. 
Six of us were there. The energy was sky high. Rewarding for me, because these folks wanted to be there and appreciated the chance.

Things were going well and before the inevitable break up, I suggested choosing the next event. I strongly advised a similar site and time for logistics and considerations for vendors.
Put my head down for a look at my phone and heard ' what do you think, sir '

Alrighty. This is week 2 of grow the grass. I chose a drought resistant sun tolerant mix of tall fescue and rye. The site was a shambles of thatch and bare ground. The previous seeding did work but was devastated by blasting sun and little water.
Now, you are supposed to rake and smooth etc. My motto ' its grass '
i.e. it will grow. die.  grow. 
As advised on purchase, this blend will need some longer than others. Yes. However, we are gaining ground [ losing ground really, b / c its now grassed ]
So, when your life comes down to growing grass. OMG

Overall, to survive in this house, you better be tough or resilient.

OK. went fishing over the Sunday - Monday hrs. Actually, anticipation was a bit low. the bass boat jammed a few times the previous weekend. the boys came loaded w / concrete pads and bases [ in case ]. 
Well, F .. jumped in and eyeballed a new levelling for the stone supports. Gave it a go and w / a little reluctance. Success.

And more success. the morning launch on Moday, required a little ' English ' F .. rocked the boat when it got stuck. And down she went smoothly.
Obviously, a new technique and not exactly, proscribed anywhere. Well, what works - works

As in the past few trips, where to start was an immediate quandary. When you are having low success, a good start seems even more important.
Going back to the well. Over the last bit, a section called Jubilee Channel [ very deep and wood lined ] seemed to have a few fish.
We moved to the South side and gave it a go. What a Go ! Three largemouth bass in fifteen minutes plus many panfish. Later we move Westward and found panfish galore and some bass.

Something about ' success is counted sweetest
                              by those who ne'er succeed ..... ' or struggle a bit.

But to kick start the re - growing, the boulevard will need watering regularly. Rain is forecast come Thursday or so, however til then I' water faithfully

alright the follow up. truck was ready at 4 or so. The upshot : squeal sound was the shims on the brake pads touching the rotor. Corrected. Fluids exchanged.

AND it was a blah day. Wednesday drained me a bit more than I would have thought. Not horrible but busy

 🐟 quick run to the Q ' b / c A ... wants to check on the place and re - supply for the long weekend. I ride shotgun and act as gofor 

well the day went exactly as you might expect. Running around different stores. At Costco, Walmart just picking up, you know general things, toilet paper, water blah blah blah anyways and I also got to search for a t-ball as in you put tea in and it soaks in the hot water and it makes tea as well. I had to get a pepper grinder and boy are they expensive. Holy crap wood ones are $ 22. Oh yeah and the glass ones are 19 all right so ended up with a set salt and pepper grinder and I thought what a deal $11 including salt and pepper inside. Show it to A .... Guess what? It was a picture of salt and pepper. Anyways for the price you know like I said or you've seen you couldn't beat it

Managed two h out on the ' bee. A tad windy, sunny but overall a likeable experience. Except my leg ( knee mostly) was in torment. I say down and caught a largemouth and this means that all my bass were caught sitting.

Wind out of the West, a little too strong,  sometimes, mostly. We beat the rain home. Good lunch. Shrimp, Po' boy s, chili and ravioli.

The classic Po' boy is a lettuce bed , breaded shrimp, tomato slice and remoulade. I more or less reproduced the standard blend. Turn on oven, 18 min and layer up the items 

The bread is usually baguette but I chose brioche. A not bad subbing in.

Funny. Slugged away w / larger Largemouth bass worm or mouse then sat and flicked out a panfish size plastic lob tail swimmer. Yes, you got it - bang bang in 8 min - 2 bass. Sitting on the bench seat drinking water and eating chips - bang bang!

Lesson there. But what ?

An aching type day for my groin and hip but mostly it was inner thigh strain or crikey did it hurt

Took pain killers at 3 A ( couldn't sleep ). Again pills at 3 P. Robaxin and ibuprofen - the combinant whammy

We are currently ,binge watching ' Diddly Squat ' or Jeremy Clarskon s Farm. The series is listed as comedy. I think that's its docu - drama / laughs

OK our heat dome lasts three more days

Yes. Woke at 5:00 A and tossed around a bit. Massaged my leg, rubbed in Voltaren and took Robaxin and Ibuprofen.

Aching in the left hip, thigh and groin now minimal

August the 6th in the boro '

 okay today was a fishing day got up early 5:00 5:30 drove to quarter mile and and caught nothing but what the heck I got away nice day little bit of a breeze not too hot no fish go figure

Got up  early to beat the heat. On the water by 8 A. Could have been sooner BUT ...

for almost a year spanning the last half of the 2024 fishing season, disorganized and frustrated summed up my sense of my fishing tackle
I keep what I need for fishing in the bins in the bassboat. working on the  outboard and in and out of the water, disrupted any scheduled fishing 

In essence, up to two weeks ago [ started the re - sorting process ] and yesterday, the tackle locker is close to functional. Three weeks ago, I borrowed hooks from friends. I couldn't locate many items

So, I sat in the boat, fiddled w / bags and bits and re - sorted. In the end - order prevailed and a bucket was filled w / packaging from discards etc

Alright. The flags replace the worn out ones on the lawn. Colour and loyalty

Thump is a fish attractant that pastes onto plastic etc to attract fish
I used to have a tube of red - ish coloured gel. Somehow that gel is missing.
Considering my dismal catches this season. Well. Yes. Thump Orange Gel. A scented paste embedded with black and gold flakes.

' boro  is warmer but summer warm. 

For three weeks, we have had encroachment by approx 30 ants. The first attempt was sugar and boric acid, eat up and take back to nest. Not successful

Next was diatomaceous earth. a fine white powder of ground seashells. The effect is to dehydrate the little buggers. This earth is food grade and safe for humans etc

Well, some success but still they came. Two days ago, I cleaned up under the sink. Our recycle food bin is there [ so splatter and leavings also are there ]. I washed and gave a final rinse w / vinegar.
As well, I created a dike of diatomaceous earth around the pipe openings. I went outside and sprayed  ' One Shot ' for spiders. Spray and let dry. around door ways leading to the kitchen. I pulled the stove and sprayed the floor corners and pipe openings.

we went and picked up fish and chips. no cooking in here tonight
we have an ant problem, the black ants are sneaking in and of course, picked the kitchen as their new getaway spot. I've been puffing them w / diatomaceous earth. The theory has them taking the white sprinkling that they get back to the nest. The diatomaceous earth supposedly gets in their joints and cripples the movement.
However, the sprayed ones are crawling off and expiring in the kitchen [ mostly ]

for the next layer of prevention, I sprayed vinegar on the door sills and deck. Vinegar is going to break up their scent trails and besides the ants don't like the taste of vinegar.

Highlights of the day. The After hours clinic at our Dr s office. The skinny. Showering after Mon fishing adventure, I touched a ' welt ' in my upper groin. Red and angry  I have been using alcohol to clean / Polysporin to control bacteria. 

I couldn't wait another day, in case the Dr was busy this week ( meaning waiting 5 days ) The office has 8 Dr s who take turns on the after regular day service.

I showed the Doc my picture of the offending infection. He asked questions then prescribed an antibiotic combo. His guess was a follicle irritation that bloomed

in the ' boro. we have a heat alert from Environment Canada til Wed night

and we were hot on Monday. F .. said can't we fish in the shade. Well, we sat in the shade and caught nothing but was it cool under the trees

actually, I was pre - concerned about letting the guys down if I couldn't take the heat 
well, was not alone. I mean hot is hot. and natch, they are not getting younger

this combo makes getting up in the morning, painful to debilitating
a matter of degree each day

the solution. rub in some Deep Freeze gel. I do the left hip and around back toward the spine

Tried Voltarin that contains De ......... An analgesic. On par w / ibuprofen or acetaminophen 

Deep freeze does as well as Voltarin 
actually, following the pain
further a deloading exercise that I found on line is helpful

next. how about Ibuprofen or Acetoninophen [ plus robaxin, muscle relaxant ]. often helps
BUT if I can use the gel and unloading and skip the oral medication

I'm better off. I can ' save ' the painkillers for when the situation is more extreme

also sitting in the typing chair  [ office chair ] for 1 / 2 h seems to help. Maybe, its changing posture from the sleep position thru the night

Wat ya got ! A 3 # pork tenderloin. 2 people. solution is pork cutlet and char sui.

Pork cutlet. take a piece about fist size. pound it flat w / the spikes. season w / Old Bay mix and pepper
egg wash and dip and press into crumbed Ritz crackers. pan fry in oil. Delish

char sui. marinate strips [ approx 2 inches a side ] for 48 h or close. I will be missing the red dye # 2 that is suggested. we do not need more dye. browny - shade is fine

and speaking of slow mornings. my hip and thigh were achy. took a robaxin [ muscle relaxant ] and put my head down. Ta Da ! its 9:30 !!!!!!

Did get around to exercising or my 35 min of joy

However, while building up courage or killing time I once again used the workshop room 

Nicely organized but lonely. Today, for the morning walkabout, I grubbed out some weeds and thought that the wildflowers could use a drop of water. The ideal tool would be a watering wand. My wand had the screen fall out. Well. I fixed it

The fix. Find a bottle cap that almost fits over the head ( screen holder ). Use the heat gun and warm the plastic. Then snap the bottle cap over the head and screen. Cut out the middle of the plastic lid to reveal the screen underneath. Not pretty but functional ( maybe, untested)

There is a chance that tiny screws might be needed

the ' boro in summer. H / H governs our life, I was out yesterday around noon. Warm and slightly humid. Of course, there was air conditioning. Here in Norte Americano, we generally, use the abbreviation A / C for air conditioning but in the UK we heard ' Aircon ' much more often

well, we went shopping. quiet in the stores but the aisles were one way
