More Crazy News + Add ons

From Fla Bizzarre - the rest ( this info was on a stickie on the laptop screen , saw it after the post ' Diary '

If you flush ' flushable wipes ' the city may arrive at your door. In Bemus Pt.,  NY , a community found wipes clogging the treatment plant grinders. By trapping waste at junctions , workers were able to backtrack the wipes to the house. The home owners were asked not to flush the wipes. Picture the knock at the door ' We are asking not to flush wipes down the toilet , pretty please '

Google street view allows you to see your house or your neighbour's.
How about - your watching your street and you spot a dead grandmother on the porch. Yepper , body spotting.

Jeff Vinek , owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team purchased a 4.5 mill home - and is knocking it down to custom build a home.

ADD ONs
The teams in red continue their early season surge. Both Arsenal of London and U Ala won on the week end.

We got the rain. Still cloudy and gray. Temp is 70 F and this is beautiful.

I was invited to a fishing jaunt 3 hr north of the GTA. There would have been 4 guys. The French R. is a big thing. The water moves and it is deep. I explained to David next door that you need to get down to 50 ft w/ 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz jigs. He was incredulous. He figured that I exaggerated the depth , no way.
I've experienced that kind of water before but that was the St Lawrence R - and that is big.
The French R is an entity , itself. I haven't been on the ocean out of sight of land but trust me , it would be the same. The French has a personality.

Why  , 'No '

I figured a) I'm a suck for cold weather and it can get very cold
b) I snore but have trouble sleeping when someone else snores
Yeah , crummy right ! Should be one or the other.

I'll fish the 'bee , and will "  ' bee  " satisfied

Both sides of the coin

A Diary

According to a comedian , blogging is like a diary. Oh.

Fla Weird , from the Tampa Bay Times

Police investigate 54 yr old man who exorcised a demon from his 80 yr old girlfriend. Wrong on so many levels

By the numbers , Torstar . Don't even want to do this one
Detroit failing or failed , plain ugly I'm skipping this one

Torstar  Apple Review
The most common varieties and their properties - eating , cooking etc

Ambrosia - crisp , juicy and sweet w/ low acid flavour. Pack in lunches. Originates from a B.C. seedling

Thats it - nobody is going to care after the exorcism line

I was given an i-phone to use. The big noise this past week concerned the i-phone 4s s.
Mine is the first i-phone. I can't talk to it or shake it - they were showing off their phones at poker.

I can still astound the guys. I told them that using my hotspot and laptop that the minimum data use was 7 - 10 Mb for 2 - 3 emails.
They were figuring on 6 - 8 Kb per message.
Thus , loading the laptop to get Google home page must be the bulk of the usage.
I spent the morning trying to set up the i-phone to access emails.
Hopefully this will cut down on data.
Its going slow
Everything goes slow when I'm dealing w/ computers.

BTW ,Rogers ( the phone provider ) may have been nice to me. I think they switched me from my ' 100 Mb base rate and $ 20 for the nest 500 Mb to ' 200 Mb and 10 per Gb after that '
It seems that is what happened. Maybe , one of the few stories where the customer is pleased w/ the cell provider... ah , the exception proves the rule

By the Numbers

I'm not sure how this ' by the # s ' fits in to the good news / bad news labels. You judge.
In the local rag up on the 'bee , the ' Ptrbro Examiner ' , the " 5 minutes News and events - visual ' is a longevity survey.
There is a world map in 2 colours - red , shortest life expectancy and green , longest life expectancy. Plus a whole whack of percentages.

Best Country               Men                    Women

1                                Qatar                   Japan

4                                Singapore             Andorra

Canada is in green and # 8 at 82 years , slightly longer than the U.S.  at 79.

The shortest life span - around the equator in Africa. 47 years in Sierra Leone. The average for 14 African nations there is barely 50 yrs.

All of northern Europe clocks in at 82 yrs.

The best news that I could find ; Ontario apples are going to be plentiful. I 've had trouble finding decent apples this past few weeks.
I'm trying Paula Red variety , as they were on sale.

Monarch butterflies travel south at this time of year , headed for Mexico etc. At Point Pelee , an extension into L . Erie , the annual Monarch census and tour was cancelled. The rate of passage was so poor there was no point in starting a survey.
Experts are citing loss of milkweed habitat and cooler conditions as main factors.
The trend to using hybrid corn bred for Round Up resistance is a big factor. The corn is able to withstand Round Up , the blanket herbicide ( kills all plants ). The milkweed is often found in conjunction w/ corn fields. As well , marginal land can now be used for corn , to meet bio-fuel demands. The marginal land is also milkweed habitat.

Crikey ,so much for the good news. sorry , it just creeps in , all the bad stuff.

Weather is mild and sunny w/ a slight chance of rain Sun Eve. Gentle breezes and bright skies.

Have a good one

P.S. - this was a muffin morning - very good - moist and not too sweet

Did You Miss , me ?

What , you ask
No , at the QMH , intermittently , this week and missed four blog chances.
Just as well. I was musing that in recalling past blogs - the good news concerned bacteria or mircro-organisms and the bad news was people or government.

Good news. I found the fall walleye and got 2. One was over the slot limit ( too big ) and went back - ate the other.

There is no current but the other sign , the minnows were apparent. I found minnies cruising the slack water.
Finally , caught a largemouth bass , in fact , I saw more bass in 5 minutes than I have for the past 3 weeks. Unfortunately , the bass were chasing my caught lm bass and trying to feed off whatever it had in his mouth - kinda like sharesies , for bass. I took a video and you can see the other bass flashing around.
Did I get another ? No. Figures. Threw back in and they were gone.
And you're saying , ' This is good news ? '
Everything is relative.

Weather is warm and dry , evenings down to 40 + but days are hottish.

To-day the mail contained invites and offers from every casino we've been to in the past 4 months. At the Seneca Allegany pool in Salamanca , a chap told me that when he took the blackjack dealers course , he also got the marketing seminar.
Casinos are interested not in how much you gamble but do you come back. So , thus the constant barrage of invites. And it works.

And for the southern contingent ( there is no other ) , Canadians are happy to go to work. Some approx 30 % , think they have found their dream job. The higher the salary , the higher the job satisfaction. As if.......

W/ Regrets

The weather is cool to almost cold but we will warm up.
The fishing is / was slow ( that means I didn't catch much )

OK , this is going from bad to very bad. And we didn't even get to Kenya

No Talk , No Text , No Burr............

.....itos. Yes, no burritos while driving. In California , on 405 and 101 highways , a food truck called the ' Screaming Burrito ' sells food while moving. The truck sends out a basket on a pole to take the money and sends back the food. I think this action , normally , occurs between Hermosa and LA ( I think , and I'm not sure of the hwy # s ). The California Highway Patrol is on the look out for Screaming B but apparently the yellow truck is very sneaky. So , no CHiPs and burritos.
The truck and customer drive parallel for about 90 sec as the food is prepared. The basket exchange occurs and the truck and car separate.

A study has found  the US has 88.8 guns per 100 people and 10 gun deaths per 1000. The number of guns is double the next most guns per person. Canada came in at 33 guns pp.

Good stuff: 1. Microbe powered batteries. A scientist has found a system to use waste water and microbes to generate electron flow. Right now the interface uses silver and is very expensive. The microbes clean the waste water almost to the point where the water is potable.
2. forgot.   9 / 21 now. A new use for cilantro or coriander. In water contaminated by heavy metals a mixture of cilantro , will absorb the metal contaminants. In many parts of the world metal contamination threatens the population.

Weather is warm - maybe 74 F to-day , with rain falling in bursts

P.S. Remember the news generally comes via headphones at night listening in bed. So , forgetting is likely.

In the GWN

Canadian news got stalled on a bus and train accident. Apparently , the Ottawa commuter bus failed to stop at a level crossing and hit the train. The 6 killed were riding in the front of the bus and many victims were thrown out onto the shoulder.

Weather was cool but sunny and then got warm toward the afternoon.

They were roofing next door but we hardly noticed.

Withdrawl

Ha  you thought this title was about Syria.
Haven't blogged for 3 days. I survived.
Besides , coming up w/ all those pithy lead ins is hard.

Sitting here w/ ice on my big toe. I kicked the cleat on the dock while wearing wading boots not shoes and the toe is all bruised.

Fishing was poor. 1 bass every trip out but thats all. some panfish but very little in bragging fish.

Weather was cold Brrrrr cold. I refused to go out until the temperature hit 47 F. I was in still air most of the time , so the cold is less effective.
dressed warmly , and sitting in the sun soon removed all coverings except for a sweat shirt. no fish.

You know , I need to start carp fishing. Saw one yesterday , had to be 15 #. Back to french fries I guess.

Relatives come in this week end but it should be easy. They will visit friends and then try going to the nursing home for Mom. And they are staying at a Holiday Inn.

I know you didn't even miss me.

Oz.....

' Oz the Great and Powerful ' ..... not a wizard or fake or the country
Yesterday , in his debut for Arsenal of London in the English Premier league . Mehut Ozil or  ' the Oz the Great and Powerful 'was flying.
The English have a predilection for nicknames and short forms
My prediction is that the Jolly Ole s won't be long in calling him , exactly that.
The Arsenal of London are the longest serving team in the top tier of English football. Their perennial place is in the top four of the standings. However , it has been at least ten years since they won a trophy in England.
Renowned for sometimes very slick passing ,they also have a reputation for forgetting the basics. The Gunners are often faced w/ tight defenses and lose their way quickly in such games. Unfortunately , not many teams want to play fast and loose with the Gunners. That is typically a losing formula b/c when the Arsenal are playing fast and loose - look out.

As well , my other team in red , Alabama continues undefeated.

I've been cheering for  both teams for 50 years or so.

Weather is cool and fall - like. For us  , it means cool nights , dry and crisp days. We'll get heavy rains soon.

Wheelies

Yes , the TorStar did the week end , By the Numbers. This one is a nice data set.  On Ferris wheels.
The first Ferris wheel premiered at the Chicago Columbian Worlds Fair. It was a monster. Then. ( that was not in the article , we remember it from the CD book , ' Devil in the White City ' )

168        height in metres for the Las Vegas big wheel
30          m. higher than the London Eye
3            m. taller the the Singapore Flyer
1.6         million kilograms of steel for the LV High Roller
30          $ to ride the LV Hi Roller
190        m. - proposed height of the NYC wheel

see , a nice , by the numbers
Swimming the English Channel

1 341    swimmers that made the Channel crossing

And its a dieter's dream , 800 calories / hr to swim the channel.
800 cal is 8 1/2 slices of whole grain bread

Weather ;  Sunny , 54 F but going to warm up - slightly.
Definitely , fall.

Hey , the regular weekly game - yeah , haven't played in 5 weeks , happened last night. Got home at 1: 45 AM, rough this morning , getting up. Oh well , boys will be .... stupid.

9 / XIII

Tricky , lead in , as if not printing the number in regular fashion makes a difference.
Yesterday , it was Friday the XIII marathon day on Movietime station. Jason apparently starred all day

News : There was a flight this morning , #666 to HEL   Yepper , FinnAir flying from Copenhagen to Helsinki

There was a massive molasses spill in Hawaii . Deadly too , the molasses uses up all the oxygen. Everything died.

Weather : ov/cast and cool ,54 F , out there. Wind is up

Off to get a haircut. BACK home

There is a new owner at my barbershop , he's young and from the islands. Everything is changed , flat screen  TV, noisy - cell phones , TV and stereo going. I waited 1/2 hr and left.
I got a new barber in another plaza. He is my first Mario after 2 Tony s in a row.

Fry 'em

On ' Diners, Drive -ins and Dives ' ,  a show profiling Mom and Pop type eateries serving great food , twice hot dogs got featured. And both times , the wieners were deep fried and then grilled on a flat top. Wonder why these dogs taste great ?

On our way home from the States , we stopped at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls , Canada. We get out in the parkade and....... the car won't lock. The remote fobs don't work. Call home to the dealership ,try several things ... nope.
We pay for parking and leave. Reach home and the dealership. Remotes both work - why ?
Answer : your car crossed an electromagnetic pulse from a sensor.
What !!!!!!
Apparently , people who park underground at their condo often get the same thing.
So , what do you do ?  Drive away and try your remote. Park somewhere else ?

Weather : rainy , sultry and cooling

I finished at Seneca casino , w/ a loss at craps but very small. Victory ????  Yeah , didn't get killed. had fun.

The gas fireplace story. No parts. Repairman off to Australia. Three weeks and .....   we try again. Everybody is doing their best , you think. I give up.
So , in the end didn't matter we were away. Didn't matter , repair guy goes away. Alright , should have got going earlier. Mea Culpa

Wednesday 11 September 2013

Any Other Day

OK I cried a little this morning , 9 / 11 re-runs were on. I think its still reasonable to feel the sadness. However , there are  young ones who will not get the sadness , it is almost a generation past.
Something about time heals all wounds.
Hey , I might not be so weepy next year.

I've got the craps thing down to where I'm only losing 40 - 60 dollars a session. I think that we can call that progress.
This morning , 2 ladies and a guy were playing. The girls were laughing and downing their pinot. I thought why can't I have fun like that. The girls kept asking ' Do I have maximum odds on the bet '. These girls were betting my whole stack , at one time.
Oh well ,they'll go home w/  a story to tell.
So , will I .
Theirs is better.

Weather ?   haven't a clue - looks sunny , supposed to be warm.
We'll head out shortly. The casino is cool and smokey. Noisy

This is M's birthday. For about 6 or 7 yrs after 2001 , we were waiting until the 12 th to celebrate. She got the casino this time.

Tuesday 10 September 2013

Does It Matter

I'm playing craps for real and .... I'm losing.
The casino compted us for rooms , so its OK

Weather is the tropics

The cafe has great deals. I ordered mini tacos and these guys were a deal. baby tortillas but the stuffings are copious. I enjoyed.

I had enough credits for a free hot dog. Free is good ... the hotdog was good . I'm good ... can't play craps for craps

S.N.A.F.U.

In the movie , ' Saving Private Ryan ' , the G.I. s tell a newly recruited translator that SNAFU is French. Of course , the SNAFU meaning is universal , Situation Normal All F***** Up.

Well, the fireplace story. Call the service guy he comes last week.
Pulls apart the guts and takes away the gas distribution assembly.
The part is not available and is ordered for Mon.
I go up and wait. The call comes at 3 PM , part never arrived.
No problem. The service guy is going to Australia on Fri. We are away Tues - Thurs. Great.
Hopefully the neighbours can let the service guy in.
Want to bet how this part of the story works out.

You know you want to think that everyone is doing their best .... got to wonder , hunh.

The Syria dilemma. On ' Cross Country Check up ' , a CBC radio show they polled the public and had experts from different think groups and universities weighing in. OMG , clear as mud , now.

One representative of a government watch dog claimed that Hillary Clinton and John Kerry lauded Assad as a reformer and the best hope for Syria. Where does Assad get his hutzpah from , the U.S.
Sort of ' you made him , you deal with him '
Hey , heard this story before - I have

Weather is summer-ish. Rain threatens

Sunday 8 September 2013

Finally

I was despairing of never being able to produce , by the numbers , that was good news .
Well , the CAA motoring magazine came through.
Our Thanksgiving Day is coming up in Oct.

Turkey ( food not country ) facts

3 100 000          turkeys purchased
0                       escapes
15 191               acres , producing cranberries
7                        hrs cooking the turkey
16                      min eating the turkey
3                        hrs . time spent arguing about or with family

Also , the mag listed upcoming world events that you could attend
I'm OK w/ Oktobefest but ' Day of the Dead ' in Oaxaca , Mex. Nope. Its supposed to be a celebration  ...... but come on.  " Where is your trip this year " Oh , we're off to Celebrate the Dead

weather : rain came and went. Blue , cool and windy .  Neat

TV , last night ,had re-runs of 2001 , 9 / 11 events
They focussed on the efforts and heroism of the day ( s ). Cerebrally , that day changed a lot for me. No, no one close was involved.
In my mind's eye , when they show that footage of the events of 9 / 11 , automatically I can see those clips of the people in some eastern cities , cheering and dancing when the saw the towers go down.

Prior to those pictures , I was pretty much , leave the Middle East alone , they are people too.
Post - 9 /11 , well , its them or us , Baby.
If I hear once more about the ' peace loving ' people of _________ ( fill in the blank ) , I'll carpet bomb the place myself.
Oops , starting to rant here , apologies.

Had tickets for last nights lotto draw. If the next blog is from Oaxaca
you can guess who won.

Have a good one!

Are You Sure

In the Loop news , the headline was ' Canada Unprepared for Dementia Epidemic ' .
OK , but based on this house , I figured that the epidemic was here already. Wow , the number of times that I end in a room , going ' duh ' what are you here for ?

Weather , rain and cool. 62 F out there. TG , I was guessing that the lawn needed watering , saved.
I took drugs last night. The GP said that I could take Gravol as a sleep aid when necessary. I was really tired and thought maybe an uninterrupted night's sleep would help.
Slept right through except for a washroom break.
I'll do it to-night again.
Computers. This morning, the e-machine was slow. I checked the ' defragmentation ' on the main drive. It analyzed out at 1 %. However , experience has proved that ' defragging ' changes , something.Took about ten minutes.
The result - amazing speed up in cycling time. Windows are loading in seconds.

Friday 6 September 2013

On the Radio

at night. Plugged in the ear buds about 4 this AM.
Rwanda has 400 000 coffee farms and 11 million people. The focus was a coffee shop that has recently opened  It is one of the few , in a tea drinking country.
Want to famous for something ? Don't go Rwanda's way. In 1994 , in 100 days , Hu-tu s ( sp ? ) killed 1 million rival clan Tutsi s.
Drink your coffee , praise the Lord , Pass the powder.

As well , as relief efforts for displaced Syrians gets going the UN humanitarian fund is calling for 23 billion dollars. I must have been really dozey , I'm going to check that one. They must have meant ......dunno b/c Canada has pledged 45 million.

Keeping up w/ the GWN , for the southerners. House sales in Canada rose year over year for Aug , 21 % in T.O. , 50 % in Vancouver and 30 % in Calgary.

Toronto is in a ' TIFF ' or the Toronto International Film Festival. One of the biggest in the world. We're not going. Big name stars appeared - I forget their names

Weather , temperatures hit 50 F , overnight. Bright and sunny.

Thursday 5 September 2013

Bombing Syria

I guess that I'm sort of OK , on that. However , there are cities there that are reknowned in history. Damascus etc. In ' Lawrence of Arabia ' Prince Faisal talks about hanging gardens and street lamps in the 4 th century.
And according to the News of the World , you've got 85 countiries that could be in the same boat as Syria , more or less. Oops.
Yeah , where do you stop.
You know , not such a good idea after all.

" For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard
All valiant dust that builds on dust
And guarding calls not Thee to guard
For frantic boast and foolish word
Thy Mercy on Thine people Lord "

Rudyard Kipling , from the ' Recessional ' , approx 1880

As well, the Syrian army has moved missiles into the city in residential areas. The troops are deployed throughout the city and away from barracks.

Weather is fall-like. Cool and sunny.

Booked a yearly physical. The last one was Jul 2010. Oops. Let that one slide , hunh.

Listened to the ' 12 French horns ', this morning making muffins. Aha , slid that gem in , right. Muffin day , is fragrant and rewarding.

Computers. I tried to back up my files and programs. I put in a 8 Gb flash drive. The 'puter hemmed and hawed and then got started. Part way through , a window pops up , ' tape is full , insert new media.
When  I checked , the display for the flash drive said ' 4.1 Gb ' , in other words its 1/2 full. Maybe ,8 Gb doesn't mean what I think.

Wednesday 4 September 2013

She said it

Credit where , credit is due. The weather girl on CBC , from the London , On. edition  " Its like somebody threw a switch " She was referencing the sudden temperature change. Bingo , bango  fall arrived.
Fishing was credible Tues. 5 hrs - 6 bass and a keeper perch.
Wind was pretty much unforgiving but all in all , very fishable

At QMH , the fireplace quit last May. Genius , here , figured to get going on it , last week of August. Well , the temperature goes down to 40 F to-night. So , in essence , I'm only a week too slow. The gas fireplace is 13 yrs old , thus , some repair work seems logical. Yeah , most likely $ 150 worth.

Tried out the sunglasses w/ video camera - we will look at the footage ( actually , the sequences are so brief , it's really ' inch-age '.

We looked.
Problem : the glasses have the camera mounted above the bridge of the nose , at forehead level. The fish need to be held above eye level or only their backs show. Steven Spielberg is safe. And noisy , any movement of clothes , equipment etc is very loud and echoes.
Video is clear and sharp

Weather , cooler , wind swung SW - W - NW , NE is the prevailing wind.

From merry ol' London ( the England one ,  this time ) , a new telecom building , called the ' Walky'Talky ' is being built to reflect sunlight. How good could the reflection be ?  The heat melted a car three blocks away. . Oops or is this past oops . The engineers and architect are trying to resolve the problem.

On triple D , the food show where Guy Fieri visits different Mom and Pop restaurants , he ate the Home Wrecker. Ready.
A 1 lb hot dog , 15 inches long , onions  , 2 sauces and toppings. On TV , it looked like three pieces of pizza rolled to-gether. Crikey , that was a dog.
In Vegas , I talked a friend into eating a 1 foot hot dog ( and beer , cost $ 1.50 ). This hot dog had no relation to meat , whatsoever. I'm not sure how much cereal was in the weiner , either. What was it ? Dunno. The beer was related to rhino piss or something close. Sorry for the offensive language but I didn't want to demean any other liquid.
The Heineken and dog for $ 3 was much better. Yeah , we ate bargain everywhere that trip. At 12 midnight , Bourbon St Grill offered bacon and eggs for $ 3. Coffee was free the milk , 2.45.
Oops, careful what you drink

Recommending

Going out on a limb here

Fiddling w/ YouTube , listening to Billy Vaughn , why ? Dunno. Used to love Billy Vaughn ( orchestra kind of thing )

Found a ' solo ' performance on the French horn. This guy plays 12 French Horn parts in a tribute to John Williams. Its not hard to take b/c its ' StarWars , Raiders of the Lost Ark etc '. He plays all 12 parts and wrote the arrangements himself.
On YouTube , type in  " 12 French Horns "
As well , in the sidebar , there was the ' Vienna Horns ' and the ' London Horn Sound ' , both were excellent.
I played French horn in school. My greatest triumph , was playing ' Wonderland by Night ' w/ no valves on the French horn.
Unfortunately , that was about all that I could play.

Sunday , was slow ... is slow. Firstly , sportswise , Alabama thumped Va Tech w/ no offense. Typical Bama job , too many moving parts for most teams. Offense goes slow , special teams add 14 points and the defence scores 7.

In soccer , Arsenal beat Tottenham. So , my Red teams are good to go this week end.

I've been cheering for Bama since 1962 , Bear Bryant etc. Didn't know anything about Alabama ,but there was a panache about a ' Crimson Tide '.
Arsenal , well , probably , 1970. To be fair , at this time the Gunners were winning frequently. But the " Gunners " of Highbury.
What an image.
I was / am in an English fog.
I used to cook English recipes when I was 16. I loved ' Toad in the Hole ' , neat names . My education was an Imperial education. Our textbooks reflected a strong English bias. History , literature and language. I guess that I soaked it all up.
Now , with M's family located throughout England , its reinforced.

For a slow Sunday , what else could I do but make another clafoutis.
Used blueberries. Made a slight ' oops ' but it worked out. Tastes great.
The description of the clafoutis calls it , an treat for lazy summer days and a brunch. Or dessert. Perfecto , for to-day.
