exiting the Trough

thats what they call the sownward swoop of a low pressure system
a biggie that covers < will cover Ontario > and extends into Ohio - W Va
it brings rin < of course > and cooler winds

The ' trough ' drifts off to the NorthEast as the week end approaches
Yes, the temeprature will climb
and more virus will die < NOT , cuz it didn't help Australia and other places, much >

Today, magic wine came from delivery service.
Yippeee !!!

Red and white in boxes < in gallon bladders >

Rain, all day which was predicted
Sun start tomorrow and stays thru' the weekend

Wednesday 29 April 2020

East wind that is making noise < 20 mph >
Rain somehow for the day - scattered showers clearing rin beginning all day
But 14 h 5 min of sun

Fla s beaches and pools start to open. Republican led Florida touting progress has moved in Pinellas County ( this means the Sun Coast of holiday fame )
' its  OK we will post signs that say Pandemic On Going - please be careful '

Cancelling the Prunes

Yep. Ordered and cancelled
b/c I went to Costco.ca and the price differential was double
Costco price $16 and amazon price < third party >  $38

Thats a news event around here
now

The big questions remain
where are we on the curve
when does it mean
what will the nu unnormal look like

Today, Candian Chief Medical officer is saying
masks on planes
and places where social distancing is hard to maintain
the Lone Ranger rides

M is concerned about my birthday and how it would be a let down
now, there was not likely going to be a party
I think
However, we will order in
she bought me a DVD
and we will make jam tarts < like when I was growing up >
Mom let me use the leftover pie crust to make fold over jam tarts
we will do the same - except there is no pie
just tarts
Weather close to 60 F w/ rain chance

Yesterday, I was Mr Lumberjack. The evergreen tree < scarecrow tree > out front has drooping branches.
Said branches were resting on the cable and power lines coming to the house.
I got up there and cut them off. Ladder, bow saw and caution were needed
Survival is everything

a new song ??????????

No, the starting temperature and where it goes
light wind NE mostly sunny

Good news, we got a time slot for grocery pick up
sorry, thats what passes for good around here

NO, there is good news
We are safe and well < sorry I forgot ! >

We started Amazon Prime for $8 a month. Mostly, b/c it was free delivery for a month - that was February.
But TV came w/ that
now, free delivery is still important
To wit, we had trouble getting coffee w/ on line ordering. On Amazon our usual < Folgers > was reduced - we ordered two cans
yes, free delivery

Sometimes, you can forget who you are :
Sometimes, you get reminded.
I finished watching ' Storming Juno '. A docudrama of the D Day landings. Juno Beach was the sector assigned to the Canadians. The most heavily fortified beachhead on the coast of Normandy.
What did they do ? First to secure the beachead and pushed further inland than any other contingent that day June 6, Juno Day really !

Kawphy

first  thing
its yesterday s but its java ........ joe.....the brown juice

bit of a breeze, very dull looking

Yesterday's little chore in the garden was laying down newspaper to act as ground cover. You might recall that my gardening project was to de - clutter the bushes or trees or invading limbs and stems. In essence clear out the brush. I left a lot of open space which was the intent. But weeds will grow and so will the stuff that I left.
I put down 8 layers of newspaper sheets and tacked them with chopsticks. I drilled small holes in the fat end of the chopstick and inserted a thick toothpick as a crosspiece. Total cost for 40 approx 12 cents. At the Home Depot, they sell pegs or hold downs at 6 for     $ 4.
I raked the bark chips and layed down the TorStar sheets and re - raked the bark chips back.
Did you know that in the forest < maybe my garden as well > the mycelium or network of filaments from trees communicates and links the trees. If a tree is cut down or is injured, often nutrients are supplied via this network to keep the fallen tree s stump alive.
This tidbit comes from Cosmos, the series hosted by Neil De Grasse Tyson.

Who Gets the Hump

?
Growing up, that was the downer to riidng in the car w/ a guest.

Largely, the hump is gone - remaining is the question who sits in the middle when you have a guest in the car.
Well, airlines may remove that middle seat. As a social distancing necessity
Thus, 1 / 3 less seating. Let s do the math. 1 / 3 less seats forcing ticket prices to reflect the loss of revenue.
A 300 dollar one way ticket, now costs 480 dollars.
What ? You didn't for a moment think that the answer was 400 ?
Your maths sucks. B/c thats 1 / 3 more after the airline adds a third to luggage charge, seat selection and hospitality service < the smile when you board >

Weather : sunny and gentle winds. The day starts at freezing and heads for the neighbourhood of 54. The deck thermometer shows 34 F now.

the predicted high
Dim out there and trees are still < oops there is swayin in  the tops >

" a whole lot of shakin' going on "
NO - a whole lot of baking going on

Canadian food giant ' Robin Hood ' ran out of bags. This appearance is the much loved yellow background touches of red w/ Robin Hood in forest green. There is still flour but ' white ' generic bags.

My workout schedule remains at 3 days < weights and elliptical, rowing and calisthenics , weights and elliptical > followed by a day off.
I've been YouTubing and watching more TV. A show on fitness for beginners narrowed in on weights.
The benefits are tone and strength of course but more importantly weight training < even light weights 10 - 20 lbs > can increase heart rate quickly BUT have long lasting results < up to 72 hours of increased metabolism >
The study group was small on the TV show, say 10. These were folks that they found out on the track doing their daily jog.
The group went through a series of regular weight exercises but light weights on one hand and slightly heavier on the other. Work the exercise until exhausted. Twice a week, they went for 8 weeks.
Results, they felt fitter and stronger however the glucose test of muscle work showed much improvement.
And left muscles vs right muscles were not different.
Q : will you continue
A: ' all ' said yes
Q: heavy or light weights
A: ' all ' heavy
B/c the heavier weights meant shorter exercise, they tired quicker
My tweak based on this evidence. I use sort of lighter weights < 20 - 25 lbs barbell > but now, that last weight session is each exercise til exhausted - see twice a week just like the test group
We shall see said the Zen Master

she s the one

ONE singular sensation

Oh, she s the one
Reprise
I'm listening to ' One ' from a " Chorus Line "
Marvin Hamlisch

Yesterday.  a question from an archivist -
sort of C V 19 time, back and forth that we are having
Where did you go to school
Did you know other Japanese Canadian students

Well, at least 20 yrs ago < more likely 30 or 40 > a bunch of guys were sitting around and that very question came up.
We roughly spanned 6 yrs of school
We came up with 60 names of Japanese Canadian at our school
Well. M in listening added -  at her school that number was zero
I dived into yearbooks and found 32 families that fed the school. And with bros and sisters
60 seems doable
Weather : overcast and thats it for the day
Deck thermometer is 30 F and the trees are still

Bleeding cold out there

P.S. way sunnier then the day foretold

Wednesday 22 April 2020

A Report : Scouting

we tried a pick up order at a drug store < M regretted the decision - right away after placing the order >
I drove out and the drug store was mostly empty - the manager dude was right there and helpful.
The drive was interesting. More traffic than I've seen in 4 weeks. But the stores were deserted looking for the most part

A sunny day - bit of wind, tempting a person to go out. I gathered wind blown leaves < 3 tarps full, actually > and now - well, I guess that I go back out.

Currently, I'm watching ' Salvage Dogs ' the series. I AM A SALVAGE DOG !
M knows ! And is constantly reminded. As in last month. I rescued < ? my word > a ' Ikea ' cabinet bottom from a neighbour. No table top but drawer and not scratched up.
So, 30 days on and I'm doing a ' recon ' in the house. As in, a re - purpose location. This morning, eureka !
It has found a home - in our home - the basement - my workout room, in fact.
I guess that I'm building a tower of cabinets - mismatched but ' only I see that room '
so far
cuz M hasn't seen the plan
yet

Fleetwood Mac

' listen to the wind blow
watch the sun rise
runnin' in the shadows

We have a roar out there and trees are bending
sun tho'
After research, we discover that there will be gusts up to 40 mph and warnings are for possible power outages

And, yes, there was a mistake : same house # but different street. The delivery guy came back and we swapped boxes. 6 instead of 12 - but we paid for 6 thus thats fair
and 6 is enuff for now
We shall see said the Zen Master

Last night s creation for dinner was burgers. We   BBQ d the cheeseburgers and topped the burger w/ a fried egg. As seen on ' You Gotta Eat Here ' TV show.
Definitely a hit. However, inspiration came from the duplicate food order < Sunday > that doubled are egg supply. Needs must, as they say .

recipes

around the world

apparently, I'm part of a recipe chain letter. Around the world b/c the top name that I send to is addressed ' Wellington, New Zealand '
I'm sending, my pancake recipe. Maybe. I'm wondering if is safe i.e. transferring a computer virus not C V 19
Nix - ed the recipe chain mail

Sunny out there and there is sun at 7:07 AM Trees are still

C V 19 and a picture is emerging. Dog eats bat < infected ? > and passes the virus to a human host.
Now, it is conceivable that the dog was used for food. But lets pretend, said dog, licked a human.
There we go.

Ooh ! wine delivery and we made a mistake < ??? > 12 bottles of red came < did we order that  ? >

Sunday 19 April 2020

learning from

your memories

The scene : father is about 80 y.o. We are at breakfast, sort of father - son hour. We've been doing this for some 3 - 4 years < twice a week >. Mom has dementia and dad needs a break.
Well, he passes over an article re: Phillips, Hager and North, a boutique invesment firm based throughout Canada.
Dad says ' take a look at this, we really need to get with these guys. I don't want to be sitting here ten years from now and wishing we had done something. '
I read the article and phoned dad, next day. " Yes, looks good I say     < meaning, I'll think about it or wait on it > "
Dad : good b/c I bought you shares this morning
Me: huh ?

That was father, 80 something and thinking ten years out.

Am I ? thinking in a similar fashion
????????????????? really

A little gray out there. 44F -> 52 F increasing rain chance as the wind at 16 SSW swings to NW w/ powerful gusts. Pressure falling and mostly cloudy.
Sun time 13 h 37m

Saturday 18 April 2020

in the moment

sunny, still out there but coo... oool !
Caught a look at the deck thermometer and the analog hand is stuck on 30 F

The weather report gives a high of 52 F w/ lights winds SW and mostly clear

There is a trend to an improved C V 19 situation. This effect is not world wide. In Canada, thankfully, British Columbia is the the most advanced in stemming the tide. Their numbers show a hump or a distribution of falling numbers < cases >. Other provinces are flattening out their lines. However, PEI, the island has a spike in the line < upward  >
The mumbling in the background is all about how to ease back toa normal life.
donald tried to show that he can think by throwing up scenarios for a three tier ' ease back ' in the U.S.
As usual, donald is blowing smoke up your ass.
The requirements for ' easing ' are likely 4 weeks away for step 1 - well, you get it, that we're talking months away

I got out there and did some raking - massed piles of leaves gathering like an army. Actually, I opened up the garden b/c amny plants were hidden under the camouflage of leaves
Liberate !

Nothing heroic today, go figure

Friday 17 April 2020

looking ahead

Q : where were you
A: looking ahead
Q: how did you know that we were in trouble
A: by looking behind

source : ' the Hobbit ' by J.R.R. Tolkien

Aha, a little of both seems to be important

Weather from CBC
30F -> 40 winds SSW 6 mph -> 12
30% chance of somethng

At our age, on the advice of everybody < government and health officials > we are staying home in re: C V 19.
Thus, we are depending on food deliveries from a chain grocery.
The difficult part is getting a delivery slot or time < those suckers go fast and are hard to find available >

M tried her best late last night and this AM, very early. No joy. At around 11A, I was on the grocery site and thought ' why not ' and hit the icon for time slot. Unbelievably, Sunday afternoon, showed in pale green < the avialable signal >
and we got a time slot.
Silly. But everyone we told said ' how did you do it '
Well, dumb blind luck
Aha, we shall see said the Zen Master !

Thursday 16 April 2020

sun to Start

the day. Branches are still
Squirrels asleep

I predict cool temperatures and chance of rain
B/c I'm a genius and caught the weather report on the nightly news

The new ' Unnormal ' or the life of post - C V 19.
The news items are focussed on the ' curve ', the exponential growth of cases and some about recovery.
In fact, a lot about recovery is in the main feeds.

My thought was ' is anyone discussing the way we live now and that we are getting by '
In " Nobody's Fool " , Paul Newman's character says:
< hang in there >
Melanie Griffith - character : is that the sum total of your advice on this ?
< actually, its pretty much the sum total of my advice on any topic >
Wondering ?
Have we figured that out yet
Maybe, all we need is what we have now
the rest
Fluff

BTW - that movie " Nobody's Fool " also has Bruce Willis and Jessica Tandy in the cast.

Follow up : cold out there and the wind really kicked up < audible now >

Wednesday 15 April 2020

sunny beginning - again

we surround all men and all forms of life
with infinite love and compassion
and
to those in doubt and ignorance
pain and suffering and especially, to those whose feet
are standing near to the great change
Men call death
we offer up oceans of wisdom, mercy and love

Buddhist invocation

Oops ! slight mis-quote ,there

Amida Buddha surrounds all men and all forms of life with Infinite Love and Compassion.

Particularly does he send forth loving thoughts to those in suffering and sorrow, to those in doubt and ignorance, to those who are striving to attain Truth;

And to those whose feet are standing close to the great change men call death, Amida Buddha sends forth oceans of Wisdom and Compassion.

I don't think its my fault b/c I'm pretty sure that I got it 90 % right, the first time

Tuesday 14 April 2020

sunny Day

beam me up Scotty

Blue sky but rain is likely at 60 %
30 F going for 44 w/ wind SSW 9 mph

Pressure is up
13 h 23 m of sun

Update : While checking on my order for the oscillating cutter, I noticed that ' curbside ' pick up starts at 8 AM not 11 AM < as before >. There is no in store shopping in Ontario at Canadian Tire
It was 8:11 A. I threw on clothes and ran to the truck.
I was thinking ' how many people would be there at 8 if you thought 11 AM was opening and who would get up early anyway '
Answer : me
Yep, only me. One phone call < yesterday it was 22 tries >.
two minutes and bingo bango - cutter on the truck bed cover. They won't come near you, the person.
Yes !
However, one cutter was still on order at Amazon. Cancelled that one < delivery was Apr 29, anyway >
No charge

I used the cutter to re-shape the dremel hard case that the previous occupant was using.

RAIN

Thats all folks !
With temperatures around 55 F
Wind is East at 9 mph
Sun time 13 h 21m

I arose before the sun but you'd never know it
Dark out there and rain is thrumming on the skylights

The day blooms : wine and beer delivery
the beer is  ' Wayne Gretzky ' lager
a little sweet to finish and light bodied

The day s highlight : a wine delivery came

My on line order, for a oscillating cutter was processed in 12 min
arrived in 24 h
and the wait was going to be 40 min at curbside < only curbside allowed >
so I came home and will try tomorrow

The new UNNORMAL has dawned

I lied b/c the sun did pop out to offset the chill wind

Sunday 12 April 2020

another Sunday

Oops !
Easter Sunday

Weather report : 38 F but going for 52

Pressure falling

And a beacon of hope in Canada

B.C. has flattened the curve of  C V 19. Approx ten days and static numbers for cases and deaths.
But B.C. cheated
The Provincial health services were integrated and and in communication already before C V 19

Typical. of me.
A while back, I broke the side mirror assembly on the truck, backing into the garage. The dealership returned the broken assembly. I saved it    < of course, I would ! > and it languished in the garage.
Well, I found it and decided to salvage the mirror
< of course, I would ! >  Yesterday, I started in w/ the dremel motor tool and cutter wheel.
Not much progress but I opened up the plastic shell at one side. I could see the mirror mount but not quite reach it. The cutter wheel spins fast and can burn the plastic and throw up  ' plastic sawdust '.

Big gun, time.
I brought out the sawzall and went to it.
Slow.
Slow going. However, after 15 minutes, I could reach inside w/ a screwdriver. I was poking and prodding -   ' why is the plate behind the mirror sticking a bit. '
3 minutes later the mirror and its plastic backing was in my hands.
Now, to be truthful, 2 blades were bent slightly. I'm not sure if they'll still be useful that way. However, those blades cost 60 cents an piece and I have 48 more in the set.
Trade - off $ 1.20 for a $12 mirror < if you could even buy it >
You see if the side mirror ever cracks - I can glue this replacement mirror right over top.
I'm pleased

Saturday 4 April 2020

04042020

looked at the inside weather boy and saw the date
so I tried the digital date

Kinda has a neat appearance.

In the Star, all sorts of stories of people who socialized about two weeks ago and
Now, they can tell their survival tale

Weather, clouded over and still
44 F going for 54
Winds WSW 1mph   Pressure up  w / sun for12 h 54m

Our CoViD 19 story / or not.
How to occupy yourself. Try to get Sype working.
This was a two day experiment < not all day, only some hours,  still whiled the day away > w/ aggro and beer for solace.
What I discovered. The third party service for long distance is having issues. The connections are intermittent at best.
Next, I turned to Skype or internet phoning. In all, I made 12 attempts to call out to the U.S. I uninstalled and re - installed or newly installed 3 versions of Skype.
In the end, it seems a) you ignore the +1 appellation that appears automatically. Start new w/ " 1 " and then the phone number. b) wait b/c it takes a while for the system to find a connection.
The beer < lager > was good, tho'

M came up w/ on line ordering for groceries. Conservatively, she spent 6 - 10 hrs ordering the groceries and 6 - 7 hrs doing an edit to add supplies during the 3 WEEK waiting period for the original order.
The system was under intense load. You kept ordering until there was a window in the queue and then your order was accepted
Thus, we creatively killed time

Friday 3 April 2020

Its Finger licking Good

yes. We got KFC last night

Gravy too. Grease - a - rama, baby
My cousin said that KFC cost is nothing. She is spending more on groceries and doesn't care that items cost more.

Watch again etc.

Bright day. Temeprature is 40 F headed for 54
Wind 3 mph out of the North Pressure rising
Cloudy day perhaps

Oh, I put legs on the computer table for M. The table was meant for computers but the keyboard shelf pulls out. M leans on this and the shelf is only hinged at the back.  And if she slips the shelf won't support her weight. The legs were a safety measure

Did I say that ' an over 70 y.o ' stay at home policy was announced. I can go out for anouther month and a bit then I'm in the ' zone '

Wednesday 1 April 2020

Goooo...oood ! Morning

😇                             ðŸ˜Ž
Its 5:40 AM and I couldn't sleep

Well, then How are you ?
I've got my coffee < yesterday s best >

Weather : 38 F and dashing to 50 Wind is
ENE 16 Pressure down. Cloudy is the day
12 h 46 m of sun

We'll take what we can get.

When are you too old to buy a reciprocating saw.
Aka a sawzall.

I've been watching a series called ' Salvage Dogs '. The ' dogs ' and dog- ette remove wood, metal etc before the wrecking crew arrives at older or historical buildings in the Virginia area.
Obviously, some items need gentle coaxing to release from the wall or floor. Thus, the sawzall gets in there and cuts nails to release wood framing w/out damaging the face of the piece.
Yes, I bought one and 50 blades - all on sale 60 % off.
My father left me a reciprocating saw but that one weighs more than me < not really ! its heavy tho' >

Primarily, b/c I took my craft multitool cutter out to trim branches and broke the thing. Figured that I needed a tool cut out < tee hee, get it > for the job.
The ' destructions ' that come w/  the craft cutter even say ' for indoor use ', the folks the made it probably knew what I was going to do.

Look out bushes, here we come.

They're closing down Florida but Florida Beach Rentals wants us
