M wants the i - phone. Its not much but big screen , easy to use.
Here I am , searching for a replacement.
Contestants : Apple i - phone 4s $ 400
HTC desire C $ 260 ?
Went to Rogers ( big wireless provider ). found the HTC phone.
Salesperson says if you like the i - phone stay w/ Apple.
The HTC is good
" Can you show me how it works c.f. the i -phone ? "
Salesp. " you can go to YouTube and look it up "
Well. That trip made it easy. Might just as well buy the phone on the internet.
Weather : Sunny , warm - Is this the GWN ????
Much perplexed by the niceness
Ah , don't worry. The U.N. issued a report that Global Warming is coming to a town near you. you cannot escape
This is biblical

Shaking off the....
........... labels. Are we non - techies. Definato , there babe
However , M has an Alcatel phone ( cost $ 49 w/ Speakout air card )
Basically ,the number / letter pad is so small , a) my fingers can't hit one button by itself , b ) the printing is tiny
Research indicates for $ 129 a fundamental phone is available. The Huawei Y 215.
Or we head to the Apple store and buy a model 4 s which is the hold-over entry Apple phone - cost $ 400.
The present phone that I use is the original i - phone ( no number )
This phone was a transfer ( someone gave it to me , after listening to all my whining about small keypads.
Works great.
Downside of Apple is the propiretary nature of the system.
i cloud and i tunes especially
However ,methinks its about time we invested in a phone
Last night I discovered that one family has two smart phones
Plan A ( phone 1 ) 50 dollars w/ unlimited this and unlimited that
Plan B ( phone 2 ) 70 dollars w/ unlimited this and super unlimited that
Phones are basically free
$ 120 per month and are they ever connected
Last year , we ran 3 phones for 240 dollars + $ 360 for the mobile hotspot - internet away from home.
The i - phone will be the 4 s. Ancient by to-days standards , although recognizing the i - phone that I use is 7 yrs out
We will leap into the modern tech age - kinda
Weather : looks to be magic - warm dry and spring-y
BTW - the boys in Blue and Black lost to Nor Carolina
and are now 5 - 3 Crap on a Cracker

Look at the Numbers
readers are aware , by now , that often raw data appears on this site.
Raw - in this sense means that I'm quoting from the newspapers or repeating items that I heard over the ' buds ' during the night.
However , I do sometimes delve a little deeper into the article.
Success rate of Alcoholics anonymous , was reported at 10 %. Oops ! This item was in the TorStar.
Aren't AA people , generally , successful , maybe , not on the first go round but eventually.
The article points out that the AA normally ,won't include drop-outs in their data.
The 10 % is raw numbers , drop outs and all. Crap on a Cracker.
By the Numbers Pt II ( TorStar )
Shanghai received a shout out from the blog , a while ago - ' #1 , most expensive city
Back in the BTN section - this time for a 20 % increase in population to 5.3 million in 10 years from 2004 to 2014
The 1996 projection had a population of 4 million by 2030. Oops , they got that one wrong.
On the world competitiveness survey , Singapore dropped form # 1 to #5.
Spending will be 46 billion dollars for subway infrastructure that is due for completion by 2031.

34 people arrested by Fla. S.W.A.T. for " barbering w/out a licence "
35 billion allotted for heavy weaponry by Homeland Security , from 2002 - 2011.
Weather : dreary , near FP but way lots better than a month ago.
Oh , guys at QMH are predicting a bumper mosquito year. Yipee , not.
I see the doc to-morrow re: shooting pains in the lower back and vicinity. We're guessing bubonic plague or scurvy. Joking !!!! On a TV commercial for tax services , tax pain is said to masquerade as those 2 diseases.

I'm Melting
I'm melting.... Wicked Witch of the East and me
41 F this AM. but rainy and melting everywhere
The warmth came............. as promised
However , Cherry Blossoms have not been seen in D.C. , yet. Prime time starts Apr 8 , so they still have a chance
Here in S. On , aka the GWN - not ( b/c 400 000 people in On would beg to differ about the GWN ) we are approx 6 weeks from any kind of blossoms.
Successes. Under this tag , we now have Quesadillas.
On TV , ' Eat St ' , the show on truck foods , they made quesadillas on the fly.
I used a very thick steak sliced thin ( what a stupid description that was ). Normally , the flat top griddle ( is there any other kind , 'bunny trails , bunny trails !!! ) gets used for pancakes.
The griddle doubled as a tortilla cooker. The tortillas were whole wheat. The test group , M , extolled my quesadillas. As well as eating quesadillas , that represents one more meal she doesn't need to worry about or cook.
I do pancakes , muffins , applesauce or baked apple , leg of lamb and all the grilling - burgers etc. I'm a specialist of sorts - all sorts.
Lately , the apple sauce and baked apple have been done ala microwave.
My preference is pan fried apple slices in butter and then raisins and honey.
Growing lazy , I've switched to microwave style apple cooking.
Faster and can't tell the difference. Splenda brown is taking over from the honey. The Splenda brings a darker colour to the mix.
I eat the cooked apples w/ French Vanilla yogurt and granola ( usually , lower fat and almonds and raisins )
My favourite is apple crisp or rhubarb apple crisp but any recipe for the crisp part makes me shiver -the whole thing is hung to-gether w/ butter. Thus , my apples , yogurt and granola is the substitute for apple crisp.
BUT at QMH , the chicken store sells apple crisp. So ,into the oven and 60 min later , apple crisp w/ yogurt.
Guilty pleasure , once a week.
But in the last 2 weeks - 1/2 the crisp has gone into the freezer , so that I'm not eating the whole enchilada ( no, I don't make these , just an expression , ' bunny trails ' .
Did I say , ITS MELTING

When You Get Going ....
on a topic , its funny how related items pop up in your day
Euphemisms : While listening to the noon call in show on CBC , a gentleman called in , a teacher as it happens. He used the term ' bunny trails ' to describe his teaching . What are ' bunny trails ' , they are tangents , as in going off on a tangent.
So , now , I can describe this blog and my daily conversations as having ' bunny trails ' b/c I know that I do it a lot.
Weather : sunny w/ precipitation on the way. WARM is coming. The meteorologists are promising above FP , for days in a row.
Chopped ice at the QMH. The garage is a riverbed and the rain and melt flowed over the garage floor. I guess it wants to go out the back of the garage but that area is in the shade and frozen. Very unlikely to melt , as well. I used an axe and broke open the main chunk of ice.
Added salt melter and now rely on prayer to affect some change ... for the better , right.
As I was helping a neighbour move drywall to his garage , I mentioned the riverbed. He said he forgot to dig a trench in front of his garage to channel the water away.
Another note gets added to the ' Winter Preparation list. Rookie. Story of my life up there. Fundamental learning 101.
Water , water everywhere
But not a drop to drink
Rhyme of the ancient Mariner by Coleridge
But it flows everywhere that I don't want
Story of my life aussi

By Any Other Name
Euphemisms -
I'm watching ' Eat St ' , a show that highlights truck food across the U.S. but does include Toronto , London , Eng . etc
A sandwich truck has a sandwich that includes ' face bacon '. OK , Face bacon ?
They carve the meat off the pig's head. They will tell people its ' jowly ' and if the customers don't get it , its the customers fault.
They sell out the face bacon sammie ( sandwich ) every day.
In T.O. , there is a deli truck. BTW , T.O. is very strict on street food.
The deli truck uses words from Yiddish , such as kimmel which means fennel plus the winner , schmaltz or ' rendered chicken fat '
Lots of schmaltz, right
Politicians have their phrases:
A thorough review is under way
We have a process
Its working its way through the system
All the above, generally means ' don't have a clue , what's going on
and there's not much that can be done
Weather in the GWN. GG , there maybe hope ,if I can not freeze to-day , the week end might hit , 40 ++ but heavier rain
On our wish list , is a used or cheaper copy of ' the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel '. I've seen tBEMH three times , twice on the plane , going and coming ( which means I only missed 30 % of the dialogue ) and once I got to see the last 20 minutes ( uninterrupted ).I still thought it was excellent

Rumour Says...
... Mass. got snow
We are sunny but 32 F in the shade
Too bad this is Mar late - ish and not Feb late - ish
Whoosh - again
we are considering buying a new phone for me and M gets the original apple phone
The provider Speakout ( pay as you go ) has a Huawei android phone Ascend Y 215
Android is supposed to be like apple
The bad comments are : 1 ) slow data speed 2 ) no flash 3) basic functions
GG , and I thought those were good features
The cost is $ 129
I would only use WiFi w/ the phone
no flash - Ok
basic - sounds good to me
How much fun could it be when your phone is smarter than you

Agenda
The best laid plans
don't work out. To-day was errand day
Instead a largish branch in the backyard , victim of the ice storm , needed to be shifted. I was worried w/ the melt , the weight of the branch would sink it into the ground. Approx 100 lb of limb.
I buck sawed the branch into manageable chunks and tossed the pieces into the ravine ( joys of a ravine lot )
Before , I am accused of littering or biological overload or some such ................... the trees aren't mine
The trees are all parkland trees
So , ashes to ashes .... tree debris back to where it came from
The ' Mal -Asian ' passenger line has now been almost confirmed as having gone down in the Indian Ocean closer to Australia than anywhere else. Oops !
Weather : cold ( as in, this isn't news , WARM would be news )
Wind is gusty but little gasps of cold air
We are promised + FP temperatures at week's end
Til the week end we are stuck w/ cold and possibilities of snow / sleet
Proof that I'm getting old. Shooting pains , that started mid line running down to my crotch. The pain came at night , primarily when I shifted in bed. The pain was generally a dull ache but often a sharp stab came along
Over the past 4 nights , the pain has shifted , more toward my hip and buttock.... and to-day , down my thigh to the knee on the left side. I felt less discomfort last night , than before and slept pretty much w/out discomfort. however , the aching has lasted longer into the morning.
The " Doc ' is back from holidays and can see me next week and I'm on the waiting list for cancelled appointments.
Basically , I need a referral , so I can access a physio lady that we know. She might help me anyway but w/ a referral it becomes easy and she can do a wide range of treatments w/out having to check w/ the insurance company
I now know what the problem is.... nerve pinching or squeezing as the nerve exits the vertebrae. This assessment is based on previous episodes in my neck. Heck , I'm a pro w/ C 5 - C6 nerve problems.

DAS BOOT ( German U - Boat film )
Up-sale : definition , a perk for buying an item
At our local ( which isn't b/c its 4 miles away ) Tara Inn , Steve the manager meets us outside , while he smokes.
" Have I got an up-sale for you " Up - sale ?????
So, buy a glass boot w/ the ' Steam Whistle ' logo filled w/ SW and you keep the boot. The boot holds a pitcher of beer.
He brings the boot - and says ' I may have slipped up and filled it past the full mark '.
" You're not driving says the Boss "
Oops ! 32 oz ( and a little ) of beer.
the boot is nice and I didn't sink
GG , say its free and I'm all over it.
Whoosh. A term that describes most of my life. I've been trying to read the business section attempting to keep track of the $ Can and trends in the stock market. Crap on a cracker ( ta , Penny of BBT )
No way , Jose
We ( I ) have opted for a service portfolio offered by our bank.
Advice on the internet via ' the savvy Investor etc ' says that you can
do as well as these services.
Whoosh - just about covers it
I can't even pretend anymore.
I've set aside a modest amount that I fiddle w/ but thats about it. Fiddle
So between fiddle and whoosh , we have the story of my life and finances
Small wonder that I'm counting on ' Cash for Life ' and ' Lotto Max '
I'm hoping for cash for life - $ 1 000 / week for life. This is probably the smartest way to give me money. a dribble here , a dribble there.
I can spend dribbles.
Weather : I have a new saying ' cold as Massachusetts ' and we are.
Sun but cold and warm up is due Thurs
Once again , I re -jigged a downspout. The front corner of our home where the paver stones were slumping . I cut a down pipe and replaced it w/ a plastic pipe that runs along the pavers close to the retaining wall. thus the water won't go down into the ground and erode the fill against the house wall. Ugly !!
From the garage there are 2 down pipes firing water onto the lawn and boulevard. Ugly !!
Its amazing - installers look at the jerry - rigged downspouts and go ' thats not the right way '. The last time , I guy doing the soffits replaced the front downspout so it looks good.
You got it - thats the one that got cut and re-jigged.
These house improvement guys only see the ' right now ' look of the place. They do not solve my problems.
The front downspout runs under the pavers and under the lawn. The ' O - pipe ' is frozen or plugged and the water is bubbling out of the ' O -pipe ' near the house.

Missed - caught the edge
We dreaded the coming of dark , yesterday. T.O. was possibly the target of a 2 in snowfall / followed by freezing rain. The front must have drifted south - sort of falls below the Erie / Ontario L. line .
Everything seems to have melted.
How about Ohio ? Snow / rain or other ?
Mass. seems to get clobbered when the front swings off to the NE. How about you ?
From the TorStar : Gum sales fall by 11 %. The 2 most popular brands , Orbit and Trident led the drop in sales.
Possible reasons are greater choice in chewables and a swing away from the hygienic reasons for chewing gum in advertising.
Residents in S. Ont were asked to be on the look out for meteoritic residue from a cosmic visitor. The area of possible concern is so large that scientists were asking hikers / walkers etc to keep an eye out
The Canadian $ fell below 90 cents U.S. Crap on a cracker !
We're still going south , more the fool us.
There is movie starting in the theatres ' Divergent '. D the movie is getting write-ups in the paper. We , most likely will only see D the movie on DVD in home. The title seems intriguing , to me , b/c it sounds Sci- Fi ish.
By the numbers this week end is ' Crap on a Cracker ' . To wit , the number of displaced / injured / migrating Syrians. data on children being affected are highlighted. not good.
BtN Pt II: millenials ( born in the 80 's ) cf baby boomers
- more likely to distrust people , sounds smart to me
- less likely married by 26 , pure intelligence there
- less religious affiliation , part of a trend since the 70 's
- 55 % have posted a selfie
The Hop faces Virginia to-day. Va is ranked 9 and JHU 8 , and I hope that isn't the score.
Coach P from JHU said ' based on practice , I couldn't believe what I saw last Saturday '.
Fingers crossed fellow Blue Jay-ites.

Spring , What ??????
Weather , temperature at the freezing point , to-day. The temperatures go sub - FP , for 5 days or so.
Think this is the GWN !
Played cards last night and got annihilated - great cards - no finish
Definitely , not Kenny Rogers ( the Gambler ) or even Roy Rogers
Plans for muffins , this AM , are on hold. Kinda slept in a bit and I'm still groggy. Staying up late used to be fun , now , well , I'll survive , most likely.
We're watching ' Border Security ' - all we do is shake our heads. I guess we forget 1 ) this is Canada and people want in - for many reasons
2 ) there are people who make their living , doing illegal things
In the TorStar ,the article was on cell phone theft. A ring actually , where victims cell phones ( i-phones ?? ) are stolen , information pirated and the phone re-packaged ( cost $ 40 incl. cords , manual and liner ) and then re-sold as new for $ 400. OMG. I was going to buy a new i- phone ( ?????? ) but thought it might cost $ 200.
So naive. So dumb
Guess not.
The girl victim tracked her phone and locked the phone by phone call. Then followed , negotiations w/ a finder dude who offered to return the phone if she unlocked it , right !
In the end , the victim's report and info led to the arrest of the ring of phone re-sellers and information thieves. The authorities seized 150 phones in the arrests.
I'm so far behind the times. Nothing is on the i-phone that I have but calendar entries , phone numbers and notes about things not to forget.
The girl victim above ,was a student and had projects and data from school , apps for banking etc.
I didn't know that I could track my phone ( probably can't , its old , I'm old ). I don't lock the phone , in case , I can't get back in.
However , I'm now using the phone as a light at night in the bedroom
I'm using the alarm setting , pretty good.
I'm trying to leave the phone on longer as an emergency contact device. We're still pay as you go. We run 3 phones for a year on $ 240 , each call is expensive ( 20 cents / min ) but we make few calls.
Other reasons include the fact that over the past 3 months , the neighbour who had my number for the power outage has been a) receiving texts from me " How are the roads ?? " b/c their family is always running back and forth to something ( rinks , school etc ).
And L. has texted me " garage door is open " .
Big surprise there , every night , if I'm the last one in during the day especially , I go out and make sure the garage is closed. I seem to leave the garage open for chores or by forgetfulness.
My water troubles continue. The house downspout at the front corner is causing a slump or sink to develop and w/ the rain the slump is more than obvious.
Life. Home ownership , always something.

Happy New Year
1 st day of spring is Persian New Year. This holiday is non - denominational and has suffered b/c it is not religious enough , for some e.g. Taliban.
Well , not as cold as its been the last week , however , methinks warm is still a future thought. Rain last night , little white sprinkles and maybe , snow
The show that I watched this morning was on whale sharks. This program was on at 6: 30 AM. Who watches programs on whales at 6:30 , me , I guess. Sleep was elusive , to quote Paul Simon " I don't expect to sleep through the night " I guess.
Water is plaguing me , or least where the water goes. The QMH garage got run-off or put properly , the garage is a river valley. The front corner of the city house has sunk where the downpipe goes in.
Funny how water always goes down , like gravity or somesuch
Cousin W. , made the CBC news. The segment was on ' Mammograms ' and the intro was a cardio class for women. As my cousin warned , don't blink. We saw her , or most likely we saw her - sort of from the side.
The closest that I got to stardom was the ' the Varsity ' , University of Toronto's student newspaper. I was the goalie getting scored on in lacrosse in the picture. Great shot or lousy goalie cuz I wasn't close to the ball.
Thank god not even mom would know it was me , too much equipage as they saw in Quebec.
I have copies of the picture. Pathetic really , w/ out the caption who would know the goalie's name.

March Madness
is basketball in the south. Here in T.O. , we have our own MM, its called transit or the debate.
We have 3 subway lines for approx 3 million people plus the 30 - 40 % that enter the city from outside areas.
We argue over :who pays
:light rail ( above ground ) or subways
: who gets the credit for thinking of it
.... actually , this last is probably like teaching. There is no plagiarism for teaching materials b/c everything has already been stolen.
Weather : We go above freezing for a day , 39 ? and maybe to-morrow ( 36 ? ) but precipitation is coming , rainy sleety snow , they say.
The JHU boys dropped down to 8 th in the polls. Hop needs a 1 - 8 ranking for home field advantage. Hop must go 14 -2 or so on the season to get that top 8 placing. We face Virginia ( # 9 ) and follow w/ N . Carolina ( # 5 ) and then # 2. In three weeks # 1. And in between they play the second highest scoring team in the Div 1 field.
Before my evening work out - the elliptical machine , I play with my lacrosse sticks , sort of a warm up for arms and wrists. I noticed that the stringing was letting the ball fall part way through.
These sticks will not see combat again. but. I thought at lest have them work properly. In front of the tellie ( pure Brit , that ) , I began to re-string the heads. M asked why are you doing this ? Will you play again. No. Then ????????????
I had an answer. " I'm afraid that I'll stop caring that things are right " Her reply ' You'll always care that things are right ' That from someone who knows me well.
So ,worked for 2 hrs , and , well , not quite. The pockets aren't right and that means an hour or two throwing at a wall to work in the pocket. Sore arms , here I come........... deju vu , all over again
Didn't proof read , the blog yesterday. However , while taking the Highlander for an oil change and gov't inspection - the topic of trucks came up and ..... she said that I can buy a pick up truck. Cuz , she got her Subaru ... she is fair
I started looking on the 'net... Oops, the prices are all-over , we're talking 17 K to 40 K for a used truck.
Oh , the owner at the car shop takes customers to auctions , I just needed an idea of what I needed. Its a ' Chev , Silverado , 1WT , short box , crew ,4 WD ' Do not ask what all that means.... its got what I want .... maybe ........... and maybe too much.
The problem is that you buy packages.... tires and engine are standard , sometimes.

Tellie last Night
A BBC detective series called " Foyle's War "taped last night ( taped , what tape - what do we call it ' PVR'd ? ' ).
Foyle is a Detective Chief Inspector ( aren't they all , imagine ' Sergeant Jones - underling ' , as a TV show ). The star is Michael Kitchen. However , all I see is ' Barclay Cole ' from the movie " Out of Africa ' w/ Redford and Streep .
The show has excellent production values and set in WWII era England.
Weather : keep your nougies warm , boys. COLD COLD
Warming up ????? this week. Wow , we'll hit Freezing Point if we are lucky.
To-day , was Costco day. We braved the parking lot. We dodged women and Chinese drivers and the ultimate women Chinese drivers. The men drivers are determined to kill you outright w/ one blow.
What do DINKs buy in Costco Hotdog and a drink / 1.50 to start.
Almonds , smoked salmon and laundry supplies plus a bag of toilet paper the size of M. GG , one couple was shopping for the Royal Ghurkas ( the regiment ) and maybe their family , we weren't sure.
The Highlander went in for an oil change. A discussion started that ended w/ me considering buying a full size pick up truck. however , the owner at the car shop often takes his clients ( me ?? ) to car auctions. Only bought an used vehicle once , a so-so experience.
Maybe , having a knowledgeable dude w/ me will help.
We listened to Roy Orbison driving to Costco. He's dead.
The Beatles were quoted as saying ' Roy Orbison was the hardest opening act they ever had to follow '.

Shanghai Noon ( ? )
not quite , SN was a Kung Fu meets New World detective flick.
In the ' News by the Numbers ' , Singapore has taken over the title " Most Expensive City " to live in. The rest of the data is there to laud ( ? ) or verify why. Tokyo , the perennial Trivia answer fell to 6 th.
As a tangent , on PRI at night , I heard a segment which started ' and they come and take advantage of our standard of living , bringing their extended families for health care. The Koreans and SE Asians are making a mockery of our immigration policies '
Now , I'm thinking where in Canada is there a Mayor w/ a deputy who are both Asian by heritage. I mean there was an accent.
You got it - the Mayor of Singapore and his assistant were making the case for abuse of Singapore's social and health programs by countries surrounding them.
Thus , I wasn't totally surprised by that ranking.
Weather : COLD , again. We are some 17 degrees C below the average for March. We will warm to plus numbers ( 36 F ) , but it will be up and down , for quite while.
A very nasty meteorologist when asked for 3 - 4 days of 45 F , commented ' wait til late April , perhaps May ' .....Crap on a Cracker
( BTW - thanks Penny - BBT - its a great swear phrase )
' Success is counted sweetest by those who n'er succeed '
E. Dickenson.
OK , where does that come from
Well, yesterday , while waiting for JHU to lose to Syracuse. I started looking at my fishing equipment. Especially reels.
I happened to handle one reel and it was very stiff on turning the crank. Now , repair shops charge $30 w/out parts for clean / lube.
Cheepie here said I can do that - sure.
Well , got the reel apart and was checking for dirt / grit etc. We were / are very careful w/ our reels and our standing rule is / was never put a reel on the ground. So , natch , clean reel inside.
I'm applying the reel lube ... and a metal pin and plastic insert fall on the board that I was using. Oh oh .. Crap on a Cracker !!!
Where could it go ? Dunno.
To the 'net. Realize that these reels were bought in 1981 - 2. The parts lists go back to 2002. Oops !.
By accident , I saw a Google search item for cleaning a Shimano reel on YouTube.
What the hey , nothing to lose at this point. I start to watch ,
part way through the dismantling he says ' be careful not to invert the reel too quickly b/c the guide rods fall out '
Light goes on , click.
finally ,figure out where the sucker goes
Lube and re-assemble the reel. works fine. Success !!!!!!
However , things were going so well - yep lets fix the other one.
The other one being a reel where the bailspring broke while in Fla.
The cost to replace the bail spring would be $25... lets save some money.
Start the dismantling.. no problem. however ,the bailspring falls out.
Oops ! Where could it go , Nope. Now its look and look - go to the ' net. This reel is probably pre - 1980 when purchased. No way , Jose.
Honest , these reels probably cost , well , the Shimano that I did lube , was $100. And the second , a Cardinal about $30. The cost of repair basically ,means that I could buy a new one , especially the Cardinal.
Sentimentality figures in here. The Shimano was used for 22 years on the Nottawaaga River near Wasaga Beach. It was my go to reel for all those years.
In 1980 , when we bought the cottage we had fishing equipment. But we broke 4 reels in the first year. As my Dad would say ' they make these reels for guys who fish 10 - 20 hrs a year - not 10 - 20 hrs a weekend. '
That reel tamed 8 - 10 lb steelhead ( lake run rainbow trout ). We used 6 lb test for aggressive , powerful fish in a moving river.
Phenomenal drag systems on those Shimano reels.
That Shimano Aero Stradic , stood up for all those years. only in the last few years , have I got away from using it regularly. A gift on retirement brought one new reel and in an effort to get lighter reels , two more have seen more regular use.
Crap on a cracker , I am getting old. Reminiscing about fishing reels.
Well if I discuss old girlfriends here , it could be big trouble

Vinyl is Back
My sleep pattern is off , actually , its a collage
Thur night listened to radio w/ earbuds , all night b/c I woke w/ the buds in and radio on ( subliminal something was going on )
Took a nap yesterday , at 3 PM dozed and woke
Bed at 11:30 and up at 7:15 AM ( not awake , but up )
Fri night is ' Vinyl Tap ' on CBC 1. The program theme was ' Sad and Happy songs '. Randy Bachman ( host ) mentioned songwriters , Goffen and King who wrote " I'm Into Something Good ". This song was a hit for ' Herman's Hermits '.
Goffen and King are famous for multi hits out of the 60 ' s. Plus , Carole King is the King in the team.
I taped a segment of a series called the ' Songwriters ' on A/E channel. The interviews included a group session with Mann and Weil / Goffen and King. Between them , the teams have probably 50
top ten hit songs. So , King and Goffen got another shout out from Randy.
As well ,heard Eva Cassidy sing ' Over the Rainbow ' lilting voice.
I've never heard of her. Randy then says , this fantastic singer was only recognized after her death. Crap on a Cracker. at least , I wasn't the only one.
Weather : bleak. Cold and windy - to-morrow , cold and windy. The warmth is someplace south of here and hiding , real good.
Hopkins plays Syracuse , to-day. A giant chance for Hop. Last year in Syracuse , inside the dome , the Orange played a lacrosse game and Hop.... I don't know. This game was a season breaker. JHU went into the game , boasting a dominant , dodging midfield. At Syracuse , the middies didn't show up and didn't for the rest of the season and Hop missed the play-offs for the first time in 42 years.
We'll see said the Zen Master

Cold Enough to Freeze the Balls......
........ off a brass monkey " Origin : Cannon balls were stored in racks called Monkeys , made of brass. Iron cannon ball / brass rack and at low temperatures - the cannon balls would drop off the rack ( metals contract differentially )
Bright day , cold and windy.
Got around to one of my Xmas presents. A felt layout for a craps table. I constructed a throwing box to imitate the end of a craps table where the dice are required to hit ( they ask you nicely to hit the end wall ). Its just like gambling .I've lot twice and one once.
A fellow teacher passed away - prostrate cancer but we think pneumonia got him first or as a result of ????????????
I was in the same school w/ him for 27 yrs. Nice person - said hello etc.
B/c of weather , I missed the visitation and instead snuck in to the church , signed the guest book and scampered afore the funeral. Someone alter said it was a 2 hr service and 3 hr overall. Whew.
" Ground control to Captain Tom " sang David Bowie

Time and Love
Apparently , I've been humming and singing ( sortof ) and M was asking what tune ( at least she could recognize the tune ) , it was.
Yes ,' Time and Love ' , Laura Nyro.
" Oh , he swears he'll never marry
Says that cuddles are a curse
Well tell him plain
You're on the next train
If our Love don't get here first "
LN is best known for writing hits for the ' Fifth Dimension ' e.g. Wedding Bell Blues And the big hit ' And When I Die ' by Blood / Sweat / Tears and Three Dog Night hits
My favs are ' Timer ' , ' He's a Runner ' , ' Lu '
Weather : Crap on a Cracker - as Penny loves to expostulate on the ' Big Bang Theory ' Name it and its falling or will fall
We went over at least 2 GB on our data plan for the internet. Fascinating . CBC had a phone clip form the guy who started the internet "WWW " and he thought it would be a free and open avenue for people.
Well , he got that wrong , by a bit - at least $ 50 , b/c that will be our bill this month.
So , on this definitely , not nice day , YouTube - Laura Nyro , Time and Love. Then if you don't know about her. On YouTube , search for Nyro - Elton John. EJ did a tribute to LN on a talk show.

20 gigs
Our data plan for the internet allows 20 GB. This amount sounds like a lot. The data plan for my Hotspot ( mobile internet ) is 200 MB ( which is less than a GB ).
We went over the 20 GB this month. Culprits include YouTube , on line Casino and everything else... it all adds up. We won't go broke and it probably won't happen again.
BUT 20 Gigabytes !!!!! holey Kamoley Batman - what were we doing ?
i checked $ 46 is our monthly internet bill
Weather : well we're watching a show called ' Arctic Blast ' , a sunspot pulse puts a hole in the ozone layer , cold air flows in and freezes the surfer and his girlfriend right on the beach - and everyone else in Tasmania except the hero guy and daughter.
Thank goodness it was Tasmania - N.Y. has just about been victim to every other disaster.
To-morrow , a hole in something , changes our forecast from sunny and warm to-day to - up to 4 in of snow , followed by freezing cold on Thur. Fri will be warmer.
This fluctuation is our March weather. temperature - who knows - snow , of course , 70 F , of course . Get with the program
Fla is warm

A Blast of Warm
Except for the wind ( frigid ) the day is sunny and warming. The backyard thermo - sensor is reading 40 F and its in the shade til later in the day , so it will warm up past 40 , most likely, tres goooo...ood !
' You have drank from the fountain of Innocence
And experienced the long cold wintry years ' V. Morrison
To-day was the eye doctor. I don't know who talks more , Doc or me
and I probably should shut up but he is well read and interested in a wide variety of topics.
Basically , I'm in a holding pattern re: vision , minor variance year to year. However , I need new reading glasses b/c the cumulative change over three years is pronounced. Drug plan may cover a 1/3 of the cost.
The Blue Jays of JHU are now 5 - 0 , a good start. However , now comes the stretch of 5 games Syracuse , Virginia , N Carolina , Albany and Maryland. All very good teams and potential tournament entries. Hop must win 3 of these for any realistic chance for a championship run. Hop is ranked higher than 4 of these teams but all are great programs w/ the potential to win as many games as Hop. Advantage would be 4 /5 games are at home. I'll see one of these , live.
Yesterday , chopped ice at the front of the driveway , attempting to widen the entry. The W side especially is shaded and the build of ice / snow will last a long time. I exposed large areas of ice underneath and this will enhance the thaw process.

Now For Something Diiferent
Moab peeked around the amphora of oil once more. Nothing. Of
all the jobs they took on, this observing stint was the worse. No action just
sit and wait... and wait. He and Pract were on their fourth day watching the
Dik-mara and his doings. Three days of, leave the house, walk to his shop and
sell the baskets consigned to Dik by local weavers.
Moab fingered the white stone that hung from the chain
around his neck. This stone was his good luck charm. Pract always chuckled when
he saw the “ good luck “ piece. Moab had found the stone on the body of a
dead waljie , killed when a dart had slipped through his visor and pierced his
brain. Pract questioned how a stone that got its owner killed by a next to
impossible shot through the visor vent could be called “ lucky “. As Mo shifted
to relieve his cramping bottom, a blade passed through the air where his head
would have been.
Without thinking, Moab swung his long dagger from its place
on his belt and caught the would-be assassin in the throat as the momentum of the
swing brought the killer forward past the amphora. A second stab finished the
assassin before he could defend himself. Now, Moab, assumed “ assassin “ was
the correct word here. Moab didn’t recognize the vest or weapon on the body but
he sure felt that it was a planned killing.
Pract came racing
from his hiding spot, long sword drawn and a slab of metal in his hand. He
stopped short and stared at the body and shrugged. He spoke three words “
Are you okay ? “ and his gaze swept the alley.
Seeing no movement, he leaned over the body and searched the corpse for
coins or valuables. Turning the body on to its back he examined the robes.
“Mo, this one is a Fortan sect killer. He was on a mission.
And it was you or your head. “
Moab grinned and said “My bum was sore and I moved and
slipped a bit on the cask. Lucky I guess. “
Pract mumbled ” And
you think the stone saved you. Pfft !
“ and
spit onto the dirt. “ They pay these guys 4 – 5 dremes for a job like
this. Someone really wants you dead. Hey, you’ve been romancing some rich
merchant’s wife or daughter? If you have,
we need to leave and quick “
“ Wait a minute, she
worked in the Shilva Bar and I paid her, honest. It must be this job. Maybe the Dik saw us or me and sent the
Fortan. “
“ And why not both of us on the list ? “ croaked
Pract
Mo grinned “ Because , I’m the brains of the outfit “
Pract spit and smiled. When Pract smiled most people reached
for a weapon or ran. Moab smiled right back.
“ Well , we’ll finish this job and blow this place. One more night at the Shilva and we leave
come morning. “
Above is my effort at an adventure story. There is more but lucky for you not much more,
Weather : bright and sunny but the temperature won't break freezing pt. to-day. We expect considerably higher temps Mo - Tu - maybe 40 F
There will be no snow transmogrification ( moving the stuff ) in the backyard , I'll wait now and see how the melt goes. There is a channel for melt water out to the lawn and the snow mound is basically out past the shade line and mostly in full sun for the aft.

The ' To Do ' List
Yesterday , was a success.
I bought a new set of cordless phones. The set we had developed issues. The latest , was the irritating habit of going to conference hold while you were on speaker phone mode. And no way to get back to speaker phone or ordinary talking.
The batteries seemed to have intermittent storage life ,10 - 30 minutes.
So , the Source had a 2 handset model for 50 dollars + 10 for replacement for 3 years. The way the first one died made me think not bad considering a) batteries are 20 something a piece to replace and b ) after 2 yrs there is a $ 8 charge for service advice.
More frozen snow and ice got the heave - ho , moving said white stuff further out from the basement wall. As well, opened up the driveway as our double - width drive had become a single width at the entrance. I used an axe to chop the ice up. Some pieces weighed 20 lb or more and couldn't be lifted by shovel. As well , there may be dents in the asphalt - Oops !
I need a fishing license renewal and got so frustrated on the website , I gave up and went to Services Ontario. Nope ,we don't do fishing licenses and don't have any idea where you could go - ' on line ? '. Right.
M took pity and went on line and toughed it out and Bingo bango , Bob's your uncle , I have an e-license for now and the plastic gets mailed in 3 weeks.
Visited Mom at the nursing home. It was story hour and I didn't ask to see her. trust me , anything they do is way better than me seeing Mom in person. There's nothing left in terms of contact w/ me , its just her life there at the facility.
I learned a long time ago , maybe , the first 10 days , the staff are way better at dealing w/ Mom. It shows and I know it.
Weather : 34 - 38 F , breezy and the wind is cold but real sunny yesterday , to-day , gray and stormy looking.
Oh , BTW , over 300 people have seen this blog ( I think ) , Blogspot keeps track. I'm not sure if I count as a viewer. If I count , the number is really probably 3. Keep talking to the ether , I suppose.

Looking Ahead.....
.... said Gandalf. In reply to the question where did you get to. And how did you know we we're in trouble ' by looking back ' replied the Wizard. All from the Hobbit , JRRT.
I'm not 64 yet ( 2 months ) , but this is my 64 year .
What does this mean ? Haven't a clue. Yesterday , on CBC , ' Quirks and Quarks ' , a segment was on evolution and sex.
The story centered around salamanders of a species that has no males. The female can lay viable eggs that are clones of her. However , she does need the fluids found in male ejaculate. The female goes seeking a mate from another species. Apparently , males don't mind the sex ( go figure , ladies ) and then the male goes on his way. Our female can now lay eggs.
The point was that there is no advantage to the male , genetically. So ,in evolutionary terms , if the male gets no benefit , how did this system develop. The premise is the we reproduce to pass on our genetic information. Females select males who represent characteristics that are desirable for the species. The author said he can see this desire when he looks at his son. Love of the being but also a need for continuation.
Oops , I blew this one. No kids. Double income ( D.I.N.K. s ). I'm not passing on any traits.
An aunt has a childless sister , who says in reply to the ' don't you miss not having your own children ' ... 'Yes, one day a year '
Weather : bright and sunny w/ the promise of 36 F. Unstable weather to follow , flurries etc.
Going on w/ the ' my life ' thingy. This thought process was prompted by a rash of deaths , among our friend's parents , four since January. we are not close , hopefully , still , the thinking is if you plan ahead financially , why not plan ahead in other ways ,or is it the same thought process only w/ a broader scope. ????
Don't know.
I like the blogging. Kinda like thinking out loud. And this is one of the times where , having a following of 2 ( or so ) is a good thing. fewer people to turn off the blog.
And if your wondering , no this rambling , pretty much represents the way my mind functions ( un-functions ) and also the manner in which I seem to perform physical activities. Many things on the go - coffee cup found anywhere through the house , high or low.

What Now ??
I'm 64 ( Will you still love me , Will you still need need me , When I'm 64 - GG , the Beatles circa '70 ).
I'm getting middle age spread. I do exercise. My elliptic routine is free weights and calisthenics.
What happened ? I see former students and go ' how can they have grand-children ??? '.
I went to U of T , played inter - fac lacrosse. Had fun and graduated.
Innis College was the best thing that ever happened to me up to that point. Social life and pretty good friends. Do I see any now ? No.
Looking forward. we are applying for Nexus - quick pass for the U.S. border. We still travel or will travel. I'm balking a bit about river cruises in Europe. We'll run across the border to Seneca Casinos,
and Fla. And the cottage ( QMH )
What happened ? I think I'm getting old. Or older. Holey Kamoley , Batman.
I'm not complaining , just wondering. I think its allowed.
We are not going to the ' why was I put on earth ' conundrum. I'm past that. I assuming someone made a mistake or at least really didn't think the thing through. I'd be in touch w/ that kind of thinking or lack thereof.
Weather : warming and we will be plus C to-morrow. Then Ont. gets to worry about flooding b/c there is a whole whack of white stuff to go away.
Ohio needs to worry about over-streaming in backyards.
Bedbugs. M found a site ' the Bedbug Reporter ' , Egads , don't want to bring those guys home.

Hibernation and me
Was there a time when I didn't hibernate in winter ??
I seem to remember X - country skiing , what 4 - 5 times a winter , more ??
This year , I've shovelled the backyard , moving the snow fall from the roof away from the foundation. That was 4 days , maybe an 1 hr / day. Plus the deck , cottage and home but that was 1 hr at most.
No winter walks , feed the birds or tap the sap ,for us
Does running to the cottage count. I drive up . Stop at the chicken store ( 3 Roads Farm Store , run by the chicken farm ) watch TV and come home. Oh , there is the card game too.
I suppose running out to the cleaners doesn't count , huh ?
I'm not alone. The topic of hibernation has come up a few times in conversations during the last 10 weeks.
Of course , our house is pleasant as a refuge. TV in HD , thanks to M. Computer w/ internet access. Everything an urban Canadian could want.
I suppose we could count the power outage week as camping b/c it was pretty close to the outdoors. the inside temperature did get to 46 F in 80 % of the house.
On the topic of Sherlock Holmes. ' Showcase ' is still being taped and although I've seen these episodes on PBS , I'm still muttering "don't remember that ". Based on the aging effects seems that I better get used to that phrase.
This aft , I will try to catch game 5 of the lax season for JHU , as they travel up-state to Emmitsburg , Md , home of the Mt St Mary's
Mount ( ? ) , their opponent to-day. Both M and I have been to a game in Emmitsburg. Hop is now ranked 3 or 4 in the USILA poll and the Mount is unranked.
A dangerous game for JHU. The Mount has lost big in 2 of 3 games , this year, BUT , this is a Maryland team. The youth breathe and dream lacrosse in Md. With upwards of 15 teams ( Div 1 ) in the area ( 100 mile radius of Baltimore ) , the lowest ranked of teams are getting well- schooled , motivated players , even if undrafted for college.
I always feel that the success of JHU v Mt St M is the Hop defence holding the Mount under 5 goals. This effort would not be an insult to Mount players but a bellweather of whether Hop played disciplined lacrosse or not. JHU has the horses and in all games , coaches feel that the team should play at their level regardless of the opponent. Sometimes like all teams , Hop fails in this regard. I've been their live to watch it happen.
Go ! hop

The More It.............
.... snows , tiddly-pom
The colder my toes grow , tiddly -pom
lines from A.A. Milne
Snow is coming but the ' colder ' is here already. The F temperature read 3 ,this AM at 9:30 w/ bright sunshine
Computers ! Can you hear me curse ???
Situation : yesterday , I'm going to play the ' Doobie Bros ' while I type. Specifically , ' Minute by Minute ' , really old. And maybe , Laura Nyro
Nope , Windows Media Player ( default program ) can't find anything , esp a CD.
This morning , go to Windows on line , Help . Crap on a cracker.
" Download Wind. Media Player"

" Here's your validation code "

" Press , run "
" Your system cannot run Windows MP 11 '
" You can download an alternative MP "
" Press run when prompted "
" You cannot install an older MP program than your installed MP
" Do you want Windows Security system , free for a trial "... No , 3 times
I gave up , cleared all. That was 15 minutes , minute by minute , trust me.
Tried Windows MP on the menu.
I'm listening to DB s right now. The MP found the disk and listed the songs and I hit play.
Alright , I'm dumber than a stump . Watched the whole Academy Awards. M and I discussed a ) we saw ' Gravity ' ( me ) and ' Blue Jasmine ( her ).
Both were OK , viewing fodder , mostly. ' Gravity ' got 7 , ' Blue Jasm ' got best actress.
b) no other nominated movies between us.
I thought ' Percy Jackson and the Sea Monster ' beat ' Gravity hands down.
I've been burning the Bytes on the computer. There are 10 days left in the billing cycle for the internet , we've used 16 GB of the 20 in our allotment. Culprits are YouTube and music videos , gambling ( Seneca casino on line ) and lacrosse esp, a live broadcast from Baltimore ( close to 3 h )
If we go over and we will , the overage charges are $ 2.50 / GB.
And in reference to burning Bytes. I go back and listen to ' Djobi , Djoba ' by the Gipsy Kings. I searched for covers of their song.
so ,after burning Bytes , I can recommend
a) Djobi ... Dj.. by ' Nico and the Gipsies
b) D ... D .... by Gipsy Phen
Both are not even close to the original. But different can be good.
my take " fakey can be good "
Now , you need to like D.. D... by the GK to start. This represents a further adventure into my eclectic taste in music.
The JHU Blue Jays did beat Princeton to go 4 - 0. PU was ranked below them , but I wouldn't ever count on beating PU in any year.
So , this win is a big step in Hop's season.
On the dental flare up front. Pain free , Monday. I've survived the week end, thus the chance of a flare up infection , now goes to 60 / 40, there will be an infection problem. I haven't been able to put in mouthguard at night , tho'.
Cross your fingers , troops

And the Oskar ......
...goes to ............ No misspell there , we have and use a ' Oskar '. Our Oskar chops and blends food. A little small and can't do anyhting else but handy.
How shallow , superficial and self-serving are the Academy Awards
Pretty much and I'm sitting here watching and typing , after eating sitting here and watching.
We did a family lunch thingy at a Japanese buffet restaurant. This system has you order from a pre-printed menu w/ check boxes. All you can stuff in w/out leaving too much left-overs. Our table of 5 was perfectly stuffed but no extras.
We joked at our table ( one of five tables ) that we thought ' Tatami ' was mat in Japanese. however , we also said they could have called ' hira gachi ' and we would have thought it was Japanese , and we are Japanese.
Rice three times ... teriff What a bonus. Been to SuperSushi House ( twice ) and the Japanese Buffet. I probably look like I ate rice for 3 days.
The cuz goes back to New Mexico to-morrow w/ plans to return in summer w/ live-in partner.
The younger cousins compared tatoos and ear rings and these were the guys. OMG , 3 hrs for one tatoo , engraved on the inside of the upper arm. Crap on a cracker , I don't even shave there.
Yes , the weather is cold , AGAIN and will be all week til Fri , when we think it will cross over into positive territory

H.O.U.N.D. of the ...............
We're back to Sherlock Holmes - modern British version
.......of the Baskervilles. The PVR is automatically recording SH on ' Showcase ' channel. And its a mystery. Yes , I recorded SH on PBS but didn't think that I had chosen ' Showcase ' as well. My thinking was that the recording would be triggered by the code for the show and that the code specified channel as well as program. Maybe ,before leaving for Fla , I did start recording on ' Showcase '. Irrelevant b/c.......
Bereft of good TV otherwise , I'm re-watching SH.
However , is it re-watching when you are going ' didn't remember that... didn't remember that ' throughout the show ?
So ,thats 2 episodes ' Scandal.. ' and ' H.O.U.N.D. ... '.
HOUND w/ the periods are initials. The modern SH turns to genetic research as the mechanism of the problem at Baskerville research facility , the heart of the Moors.
Bloody cold out there ( pardon my French )
Blessing of blessings , I've had rice 3 days running. We are a mixed household , English and Japanese , and while I do enjoy potatoes / pasta etc. , I miss the rice. In Fla , my rice choices are dismal.
Started w/ pork chops ( shake and bake , umh ) rice on the side. Wednesday, take-out sushi on Thurs to celebrate ' waiting for the infection flare up ' day. Friday , took my cousin to SuperSushi ( yes , they 'NORM - ed ' me , love it ).
Cousin and I had broiled salmon head , age tofu and kamakachi roll
( see previous posts re: sushi ) , and shrimp tempura.
Cousin is a good choice for dining companion b/c he doesn't balk at the salmon head. The salmon head is deliriously tasty. could be an Asian thing , I suppose.
And Sunday , is Japanese buffet day w/ the relatives , the ' hello cousin ' get to-gether. Cousin is from Albuquerque , NM.
Grimsby watches ' Space ' channel. I wonder does Grimsby have fangs ??
Our team , Johns Hopkins , is 3 - 0 in lacrosse. Hop plays a challenging schedule. You notice when they say challenging , it usually means ' not a hope in hell '.
For the ' kings of spring ' ( from a lacrosse ad from Inside Lacrosse magazine for College lacrosse in general ). Hop will play 16 games.
Starting to-day , they will face their second Top 25 ranked opponent and their first Top 10 opponent too !
The pattern will not change from now. In total , Hop will face 7 teams ranked in the Top 25 and 6 of those appear ahead of JHU in the rankings.
To-day is Princeton , a long time nemesis. A tough defensive minded squad that gives the Bluejays fits most years.
JHU is not presently , affiliated w/ a league. As an Independent , Hop depends on a rating based on quality of opponents beaten.
In ' Jeremiah Johnson ' the movie , JJ is reminded among the indians , a tribe's greatness is determined by how powerful its enemies be '
Well ,this method applies to JHU.
How effective has this method been. Until , last year , JHU had appeared in 41 straight Championship tourneys. This is a record for most consecutive appearances , in post season play.
Next season JHU , will play associated w/ the Big 10 ( which isn't Ten anymore , closer to 14 ). The leagues that have 5 or more teams are allowed to send an automatic qualifier to the Championship round. Plus any others that are selected based on Strength of Schedule. This process sounds simple but by the whining and moaning that goes on post ' Selection Sunday ' , you would think the Huns and Visigoths had come to their school.
The flare up report : took 2 ibuprofen and went to sleep. All quiet on the Western front , so far , this AM
Go ! Jays
