Aha, You Said

and again

I finished the Guy Gavriel Kay, ' Under Heaven ' novel. Beware the Tagurans even bearing gifts. The story begins when a Kitan princess is given as a peace offering to bind a treaty. Years later, having attained real status in Tagura she honours a deed by rewarding 250 heavenly horses called Sardians.
The deed is a semi - soldier / scholar / warrior who decides to bury 20 000 bodies left to rot after a great battle between Kitai and Tagura.
The gift is enough to get a man killed or almost killed 3 times.
Embroiled in the politics and treachery of the high court, our hero tries to live out his life ( as long as possible ).
And the origin of the name of the novel :
from two poems

" the nature of existence under heaven "

" the centre of the world under heaven "
