I figured it out. The gmail on the TracFone worked the last 4 days of our holiday.
Solution !
Send a picture from the phone
Somehow , all the ' little men ' inside the phone remember what gmail is when you use it for photos
Voila ! gmail works
This fix will need to be battled tested
and my usual victim will likely get 3 or 4 duplicate test messages
